System won't boot after latest updates installed

I installed the latest updates this morning. There were 7 of them. A few XP
Security, an XML and a Malicious tool update. After the updates were
installed, it asked to Restart system. When my PC tried to restart, it
stopped at the initial splash screen where you can hit F1 for Setup or F10
for Recovery and that's it, dead. You can't restart from a CD or floppy
because it doesn't go any further than that screen, everything is disabled.
What the heck???
