Systems hangs while downloading an update

I recently got my new system - with a fresh installation of Win XP. Here is
the problem I am having:
- When I go to Windows Update site, it found 2 critical updates to be
installed. I clicked to download and install - and it brings up the screen
where the download/install progress is to be reported. The system just sits
there - with no sign of anything being downloaded. I cancel and try the
troubleshooter, but no real help, as I never got an error number (and just
gave up on the install).
- Turns out the automatic updater is on and it did work (partly). It found 1
critical update and downloaded and installed it. So, now the Windows Update
site finds only one update, but has the same behavior.

I did add the sites mentioned in the FAQ into my trusted zone. So, that's
not the issue, although some other internet options could still be the cause.

Any help would be highly appreciated...

Thanks for trying, but patient saw no improvement. I read the information on
the link (had to search for 906602 as the link did not work). I am not
entirely sure if it is the problem with the update or with my system
downloading it. So, let me give a more detailed description of the problem:

Windows Update finds 1 high priority update: Security Update for Windows XP
(KB919007) install. I select Install Updates and the pop up 'The updates are
being downloaded and installed' comes up. However, I believe nothing is
downloaded - as the progress bar 'Preparing to download' shows no sign of
progress/activity, same with the installation status window. I am guessing
that something preventing the download...

Do you understand what "troubleshooting" means?
In the scenario of your analogy it would be akin to telling
your doctor your sore arm didn't feel better when you were
asked to go for an X-ray...

> I read the information on the link

Aha. Didn't even take an X-ray? <eg>

Reading is not troubleshooting. Give us some test results
or a more detailed symptom description.

> (had to search for 906602 as the link did not work).

Then perhaps that is a related symptom which you should
look into diagnosing also.

....
> I am guessing that something preventing the download...

It's fine to guess. That's called developing a hypothesis.
The next step is making the hypothesis testable.
In this case use the logs or do some tracing. Etc.

Good luck

I followed the trobleshooting procedure in the link. On 'Review your update
history' - it shows the update for KB919007, the status shown is Cancelled,
which is consistent with my description of canceling out of the download that
is not going anywhere). I did the search for file KB%.log - there was one for
KB925486 (the update that automatic update pushed through as per my
description), but none for KB19007.log. None of the help talked of the
procedure for tracing.

Part of my problem is that this is not a failed update as it is a failure to
download the update. I am very eager to resolve this problem, but am not
particularly tech savvy. Would appreciate any help.

How to view the Update log in Windows

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy
and paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist you. On
the other hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by
searching the Newsgroup.

The last pose was helpful. I admit my error in not looking for the Win Update
log, instead of the KB%.log. I am including a part of my log below. The areas
with error/warning list codes:
DtaStor WARNING: Update Service: Failed to update backup store
DnldMgr WARNING: Resume failed with 0x80200003. Continuing.
WARNING: Exit code = 0x80240FFF; Call error code = 0x8024000B
WARNING: Exit code = 0x80240FFF; Call error code = 0x8024000B

Seems like 0x80200003 is the main issue - but I haven't located anything on
it. Any help is highly welcome! Appreciate the help I've already received!
Thanks!

Did you clear your SoftwareDistribution\Download folder while a download
was suspended? Go back in the log to see when that download was
initiated. Unfortunately since clearing the folders would be done independently
it would not be logged and you would have to remember when that was done.

Tell us about your connectivity path. E.g. firewall? proxy server?
Something seems to be blocking it...

BTW you may want to examine your objectives. If you just want to install
that update it may be a wiser tactic to just do the download and install
manually and forget about WU for this one. Once it's installed WU should
be able to figure out that you no longer need it and then that will be one less
problem for you to deal with.

Good luck

Try renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder: a. Click Start, click Run, type
%systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

You'll lose your update history but not important.
Run WU again and see if this makes a difference.

You can delete the old folder that you've renamed upon successful completion of
updates.
