SYSTRAY ICON

After performing the latest security and Windows XP
updates, I now have an icon (a small orb with a Windows
four color flag at top left)in the systray. Why?

Right clicking it opens no menu. Single or double
clicking it performs no function. Passing the cursor
over it reveals the message: Downloading updates: 0%

I also am trying to find out why this is. The only thing I can come up with
is that the new updates are running as an agent at all times now. The only
way I have removed this is by turning off the Automatic updates.
My concern with this is what other problems or holes will this create.
I'll post back here once I get an answer.
