Sytem Restore points

My p.c used to set restore points automatically.Now for some reason i've lost
them all and unless i set a restore point manually (even though it is set up
to do it automatically)I have no back up anyone know why?...

What Operating System?? - Win ME or Windows XP???

What happens if you try to create a manual restore point? - what's the EXACT
error message??
