A friend of mine who has a very small hard drive worries that if he uses
Windows Update whatever is the files size of that file he downloads will
then continue to take up that space on his PC. How does this actually work?

TIA

Everything you add takes up space.
However the Critical Updates is not the place to cut corners.

Start here:

And:

Also you friend may need a larger hard drive.

It does take up the space! If he's that short on space then he doesn't need
to upgrade the OS, maybe needs a new HDD?

Hi

Deleting the uninstall folders after you see that the update works
fine on your computer is one way to save space (see the second link
in Jupiter Jones post to you).

Also, you should clean out this folder now and then (WU5's temporary
download folder):

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

Which version of Windows does he have? What size Hard Drive? What is already
occupied on that drive? ATA Drives are fairly inexpensive now [80GB 7200RPM
for approximately $100; 200GB 7200 RPM for approximately $180]. Critical
Updates, in my opinion, are mandatory. Do not try to save space by not
downloading them. Tell your friend to save space somewhere else or spend
some money.
