Ian,
Download the update from here and save it, do *not* run it from it's location : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Close Internet Explorer. Now try to install it. If it still fails, then post back with the last entry from the KB9126281.log, please. Thanks for the quick response, that was very helpfull.
I downloaded the update from the location you suggested and ran it. This worked and the update ent through ok. Unfortunately, after i tried this i went back into WU as i knew there was one more update to install. When i ran this through windows update i got exectly the same thing about the checksum (I can't attach the file as its too big on the reply, but its exactly the same errors at the one on the main posting although this time its for KB908531 and the file having problems with is shell32.dll) Do you think its worth doing the same with this update? And do you think there is something corrupt with the update on their computer at the moment as i suspect that they may have tried downloading this update in the past. Any ideas? Obviously my parents wouldn't be able to download and install patches manually as they aren't that good with computers and i really need to get WU working for them again. Many thanks for your help so far. Ian. |

Ian,
What is Automatic Updates set to ? Make sure that the following Services are not Disabled by going to Start > Run and typing in services.msc Click OK Scroll down to Automatic Updates. Double click it. AU must be set to Automatic for Startup type. Next, check on Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) BITS must at *least* be set to Manual for Startup type. In can be set to Automatic but is not required. Next, check on Cryptographic Services Cryptographic Services must be set to Automatic for Startup type. Next, check on Event Log. Event Log must be set to Automatic for Startup type. Next, suggest trying these 2 steps : Show hidden files, folders, and system files : http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html Go to Start > Run and type in net stop wuauserv Click OK Navigate to WINDOWS\Software Distribution Rename the Software Distribution folder to Software Distribution.old Go back to Start > Run and type in cmd Click OK At the Command Prompt, type the following pressing Enter after each entry : net stop cryptsvc ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2 net start cryptsvc Now type in exit Press Enter Go back to Start > Run and type in net start wuauserv Click OK Restart the system and revisit Windows Update to see if the updates will install successfully now. When the Information bar pops up in Internet Explorer and you are prompted to install an ActiveX object, allow the installation. If the installed antivirus | security program monitors the installation of ActiveX objects or prevents scripts from running then either temporarily disable these components prior to visiting Windows Update or specifically allow the installation of the software controls from the Windows Update web site. This will depend on which antivirus program is installed. Mow,
Fantastic, that worked after going through your routine. All the services were ok, it must have been the 2nd part that sorted it out. Thank you very much for your help, its much appreciated. Ian. Mow, do you have any other suggestions pertaining to this type of situation?
I'm running XP Pro, and none of the updates in the last MS Software Distribution will install. I have had occasional problems in the past, but this time seems to be different. Each of the update logs has lines very similar to Ian's: 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\sp4.cab does not exist 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\sp3.cab does not exist 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\sp2.cab does not exist 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\sp1.cab does not exist 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\driver.cab does not exist 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\fp40ext.cab does not exist 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\fp40ext1.cab does not exist 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\wms4.cab does not exist 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\wms41.cab does not exist 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\ims.cab does not exist 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\ims1.cab does not exist 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\ins.cab does not exist 2.083: ref tag c:\windows\system32\ins1.cab does not exist 2.083: Starting AnalyzeComponents 2.083: AnalyzePhaseZero used 0 ticks 2.083: No c:\windows\INF\updtblk.inf file. 2.083: OEM file scan used 0 ticks 2.183: AnalyzePhaseOne: used 100 ticks 2.183: AnalyzeComponents: Hotpatch analysis disabled; skipping. 2.183: AnalyzeComponents: Hotpatching is disabled. 2.183: FindFirstFile c:\windows\$hf_mig$\*.* 2.243: KB922616 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct. 2.243: KB922616 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct. 2.243: KB922616 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct. 2.243: KB922616 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct. 2.243: KB922616 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct. 2.243: KB922616 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct. 2.243: KB922616 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct. Not sure I understand everything I know about this . . . but believe
something that Microsoft did caused the Windows updates to install. Yesterday during two non-consecutive reboots, the option to "install updates and shut down" appeared. First, six of the updates installed, and then later, the final three updates installed in the same way. Haven't enountered this before. |

Dial-A-Fix would have worked out nicely and quickly.
It has saved us tons of time troubleshooting Windows Update issues. Dial-a-fix v0.57.7 by DjLizard www.DjLizard.net I think the cryptography update may work alone, but I usually check all three of the following just in case... FIX WINDOWS INSTALLER FIX WINDOWS UPDATE (Also checks Programming Core Runtimes) SSL/HTTPS/CRYPTOGRAPHY "MowGreen [MVP]" wrote: > Ian, > > What is Automatic Updates set to ?
