task bar and desktop problem

I have an HP Slimline I just purchased 3 days ago. Yesterday I noticed the
task bar when in auto hide, which is how I like to have it, continuously
flashes on and off very rapidly, which is really annoying. I spent 4 hours
chatting with a HP tech only to be told that I needed to use the restore
feature and return the machine to the state it was shipped. well I am not
going to spend hours downloading updates and reinstalling software so I have
elected to leave the Task bar visible all the time. Does anyone have any idea
why this is happening? I have run all kinds of spy ware and virus checks and
have found nothing. And since it is a preloaded machine, Microsoft is no help.

Also every timeI reboot the computer all the Icons come back as the same
generic MS icon and will not change back to the icon assigned and they are
all rearranged from what they were.

Any Ideas

Wow. That's a bit personal.
Look to see what you put in that task bar. There is something active
there, needing your attention. If you added something new remove it and
see if the flashing stops. Perhaps it was put in by HP (Demo program
etc..) You can alter the settings in the task bar by right clicking in
the bar and choosing
Properties. Click the advance button for a complete list.

Here is a more comprehensive description of the function, and how to
help.
'Taskbar' (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa511446.aspx)
As for the icons. Have you tried right clicking the desktop and using
the sort by or view options.
You may also need to look at the "personlize" options particularly
"Windows color and appearance"/Advanced settings

Thanks Mick for your lovely insight, maybe bot flys will lay eggs in your
ass. Also learn how to spell or at least use a spell check.

I also have a new HP machine with the same problem. The only thing I found to
solve this problem and still maintain auto-hide, is to turn off "desktop
composition." Go to Control Panel, Performance Information, and then Adjust
Visual Effects.

Hope this helps, and I hope MS fixes this problem.
