I have attempted to update my XP with service pack 2 a number of times and
have had problems accessing my desktop, although other desktops do appear to
be OK.

When I try to end a particular program using control alt delete, I get this
message:

This application has failed to start because VDMDBG.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

It appears that there is some problem with mt task manager, but I do not
know how to reinstall the application.

Any suggestions?

Hey Kevin,

What is the problem exactly?

A) can't install SP2 ?

or

B) an error is generated when you try to close a program?

Can you please provide more details for the problem you are requesting
assistance on.

I am not able to Install Service Pack 2. When I do install it, I am not able
to access one of my desktops. I use system restore to go back to a previous
date.

I am also getting the error message on the Task Manager. I thought that the
2 might be related.

The message suggests that your "particular program" is a 16-bit app
and that you have disabled use of such on your OS.

BTW instead of using Ctrl-Alt-Delete to enter Task Manager
(which might have implications for your BIOS) try Ctrl-Shift-Esc
or Run... taskmgr

This has nothing to do with WU and you would probably find better
help on newsgroups which specialize in your OS. Depending on how
you are getting your XPsp2 update you might even get better help
with that problem there too. In any case you need to be more precise
and forthcoming about symptom details if you are looking for effective help.

I forgot to mention that neither one of your two suggestions for accessing
the task manager work.

I was wondering whether the application you were considering
reinstalling was the one the error message referred to
or your Task Manager.

In case this is an odd way of clarifying that ambiguity
please do a Win-F search for %SystemDrive%\taskmgr
and tell us what that search finds.

BTW there is a suggestion here to reinstall a service pack
as a repair procedure for problems with Task Manager.

<title>KB843143 - An error occurs in Taskmgr.exe</title>

(MSKB search for taskmgr )
