Hi... I’m am on windows Vista & I play a lot of computer games & sometimes
need to exit using the task manager usually available as an option after
pressing ctrl+alt+delete however it is no longer an option for it nor can I
access it by pressing ctrl+shift+esc, but this problem is only on my main
administrator account, on my other standard user account it works fine, & I
don’t think I have altered any settings to cause this. has i happend to any
one else? & could it have been cause by an update? Thanks for reading & any
help.

Have you tried a system restore to before the problem developed. You can
always restore back if it doesn't help.

You won't lose any files or data. You will have to reinstall any programs
or settings you have made since the restore point. Easiest way is to type
restore in the start/search box and pick system restore when it shows up
above.

If you go into system32 can you execute taskmgr.exe from there? If not try
running sfc /scannow to see if it gets picked up as corrupt.

hi again, i found it in system32 & when i try to access it, it sais that it
has been disabled by the adminastrator, even though i am the adminastrator...
i cant change anything about it, as i look at the properties-->security
information and for the: system, adminastrator and uses only the read &
execute and read boxes are ticked. and i cant change them as when in edit all
the options ar shaded out, only the trustedinstaller has all the permission
options. And as for the sfc /scannow, i entered it into "run" and nothing
really happend, i think that for a moment a black command prompt box flashed
up, but then closed again almost instantly, thank you for all your help
though, if you have any more ideas i would be very grateful. thanks

Jordan, I had the same and found this and it worked for me,

If Task Manager has been disabled, you can re-enable it if you have
administrator privileges on the computer.

To enable Task Manager on a computer running Windows Vista Home Basic or
Windows Vista Home Premium
This procedure requires you to edit the registry. An incorrect change to
your computer's registry could render your computer inoperable. We strongly
recommend that you back up the registry before making any changes. For more
information, see Back up the registry.

1. Open the Registry Editor by clicking the Start button , typing regedit
into the Search box, and then pressing ENTER.? If you are prompted for an
administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide
confirmation.

2. Navigate to the following location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies

3. Double-click System, double-click DisableTaskMgr, change Value data to
0, and then click OK.

To enable task Manager on a computer running other editions of Windows Vista
1. Click the Start button , type gpedit.msc in the search box, and then
press ENTER.

2. Under User Configuration, double-click Administrative Templates.

3. Double-click System, and then click Crtl+Alt+Del Options.

4. Double-click Remove Task Manager, click Disabled, and then click OK.

NoteIf the Remove Task Manager properties appear dimmed, your network
administrator has prevented you from changing these settings. Contact your
network administrator to have Task Manager enabled.

You might have to look for the ctrl+alt+del section as it wasn't where it
was suppose to be for me.

oh thanks.. but not having task manager isnt as much of a problem as i 1st
thorght it would, and i dont like the sound of my pc being inoperable so for
the moment ill leave it but if it gives me any more trouble i will use your
method.. but thank you very much, and i hope others find it useful if they
have the same problem. if an one knows of any other way that doesnt involve
potentially making the system inoperable please let me know. THANKS !!!
