task scheduler confusion

I was having problems with getting a program to prepare my backup external
drive to be safely turned off (eSata - hot swap). So I disabled several
Scheduled Tasks in the task scheduler such as consolidator and opin notific.
Could you tell me what tasks should be scheduled in Windows Vista Ultimate
task scheduler?
And, do you happen to know of a good program that will make my eSata
connection to my external hard drive hot swappable. The one I had problems
with was HotSwap 4.1.1.0. Thank you.
