Try a System Restore to the day before the updates.
Otherwise see if the updates are listed in add/remove and remove the updates.
Before doing so, turn off Automatic updates.
See if the sound returns.
Now turn on AU but set it to notify instead of downloading and installing automatically.
Install one update at a time. See if the problem returns after each installation.
Please ensure you make a valid restore point or do some type of back up prior to testing
the updates.
BTW on my old computer my sound use to disappear regularly for some unknown reason and
often a reboot fixed the problem.
You might want to check the device manager to see what is happening in that area for more
clues. It may not be WU related.
Can't hurt to check.
