Tonight I downloaded the lastest updates for Vista, upon reboot, got the
following error Boot Critical file: C\......Tcpip.sys is corrupt. Will not
boot at all, even in safe mode. Inserted my DVD and attempted a "repair",
it failed on TCPIP.sys and said there it was not able to complete the
repair.

You could try to boot into last know good configuration by pressing F8
during boot and selecting the option. If this doesn't work try using system
restore.

an immediate error screen as described above, System restore will not
repair the OS

Safe mode has a boot to command prompt only option. Can boot to that and run
sfc/scannow? System restore can also be run in this mode by entering
rstrui.exe at the command prompt. This can work when SR fails in other
modes.

The latest activity: When I try to boot into SAFE mode and choose any
option there, including with cmd prompt, as soon as I hit return I
immediately get the error screen. I did manage to try a repair option again
and of course it failed, (tcpip.sys is corrupt) but tried Restore to the
only restore point and it was unable to complete the restore. I tried to
use the advanced screen, and chose prompt, entered sfc /scannow and hit
return, the curson just blinked, no HDD activity. ITIS
