Basic line is, Vista isn't accepting my activation code. I know I have the
right activation code cuz I registered it as authentic right after I got my
computer, but I downloaded a P2P file and when I opened it, my computer
suddenly restared, and once it finished rebooting, two black boxes appeared
aomething typed in it, and I was being prompted for my activation code. When
I typed in my activation code, it wouldn't accept it. What happened, and how
do I fix it? Dell isn't much of a help, they told me to come here and look
for the activation code, but I can't find any way to look it up. Does anyone
know where to go for that. Again, I'm not good at tech stuff, but I only have
2 days befor my vista stops working and I don't know where else to look for
help. I am really good at taking directions, and would apreciate any help
anyone can give me.

Hi,

What do you mean by "not accepting"? Are you getting a message that the key
is in use? If so, use the telephone activation method to get past this.

It could be that what you downloaded was a virus that harvests valid
activation code to be used on computers in China.

Or, alternatively, the P2P file was a trojan seeded by the MCAA group to
punish thieves (and a few innocent bystanders.)

As for your activation code, it's on an orange sticker attached to your
computer.

Kandee,

Can you explain what exactly you downloaded, something asking for your
activation code "Might" be "Phishing" to get valid codes and if you type
it in and the "Phishing" perpetrator gets it you won't be helping
yourself as they may use the code and lock you out of your own system.

If you don't know exactly what you downloaded what was it "Supposed" to
be, eg film, music, pictures what?

Can you explain a bit about the computer, is it a new one that came with
Vista already installed or do you have a set of Vista installation DVD
and instructions to reinstall if you have to.

The previous is good advice. However, if you lose your product key, there's
a free download program that will find and display your product key on your
screen. Read about and get it here:

Hi Kandee,

You have experienced on of the many drawbacks to using P2P, or peer-to-peer
filesharing. It is highly likely that you have picked up some form of malware
with this file which is presenting you with dialogue boxes requesting
information. DO NOT interact with the dialogue boxes in any way. Open Task
Manager by using Ctrl, Shift and Esc. In the applications tab, select and
close the dialogue boxes. Close Task Manager. Next, open the Welcome Center
from the Programs Menu (type Welcome Center into the search box). Click 'View
computer details' and you can check the activation status from there. If this
says that Windows is activated you should be OK. Close the Welcome Center. If
you find that Windows is not activated, then skip the next section and go to
the section headed 'Restore System'. Next, you need to do a manual scan of
your system with your anti-virus software and with Defender. Disconnect from
the Internet whilst you do this as some malware can download replacement
parts for itself if any part of it is altered or deleted (which it will be if
either your AV software or Defender finds something). When you have finished
running these programs, restart your PC but do not reconnect to the Internet
just yet. If the dialogue boxes do not reappear, reconnect to the Internet
and restart your PC again. With a bit of luck, the boxes will not appear
again. If they do, your best option might be to reinstall Vista.
Restore System
Before you do this, save all important documents to CD or a USB memory stick
- these documents can then be restored afterwards. You can reinstall the
applications themselves from the original media they were supplied on. Since
you have got a Dell PC, you should have a disk supplied with the machine to
revert it back to the state it was in when you bought it - sometimes these
versions are tied to the hardware BIOS in the machines and do not need
activating, but if yours does then activate it over the Internet in the
normal way. Note that if this fails, you will have to activate over the
telephone. Please note that you should always disconnect from the Internet
whilst installing an operating system and should only reconnect when the
procedure is complete. In future, be wary of using P2P, but if you choose to
do so then it is at your own risk.

Ok, so first let me say, I have avast. Thats what was so strange about it-it
didn't tell me anything was wrong until AFTER this happened. My computer is
brand new-only days old when this happened. Vista was installed before I got
my computer. The thing I am worried about is that it was a virus,
however-when I try to run that link-after dling it-i get told that the file
is corrupt. If I try to run it on it own-I get told that "Windows has found a
problem with this file. Name: Windows-KB890830-V1.34.exe Publisher: Unknown
Publisher. This file was blocked because it does not have a valid digital
signature that verifies its publisher." What do I do to make my comp accept
this?
