Temporaily Removing SP 2

I've been having trouble loading up my Lexmark X-83. It seems like theres a
conflict somewhere. It was working fine until I changed the port that it was
connected to. I did a complete uninstall and reinstalled using the Lexmark
Driver; Windows Add Printer Wizzard...I always get to a certain point, then
I'm prompted to connect the USB connection and I get a bouble telling me that
the hardware connection has failed and that my hardware may not function
properly. I keep getting a "ping" until I finally close the download window.
My printer, prints only b & w. I've tried reinstalling the software on top of
this; changing port; changing cables...same result.

Over at the Dell BBS, I was told that there was a conflict proble with the
X-83 and XP. I thought that the last time installed this printer (1.5 years)
I had to take off SP2, install the printer and then reinstall SP2.

Is this something that I can try without causing irreversable damage to my
system?

Thanks,
seeburt

I would not recommend removing SP2 as there have been quite a few updates
since SP2 was released.

Have you checked Lexmark site to see if there are updated drivers for your
printer?
Have you tried installing the drivers in compatibility mode? (it's a long
shot) sometimes works.

I did go to the Lexmark webstie and download the (only) driver they had for
my OS and printer. I've never heard of loading something in Compatibility
Mode, can you explain?

I'm about ready to just buy a new printer. This happended the last time I
loaded this printer.

Thanks for your input,

seeburt

If you can install it, it might work. No guarantees.

"Although you can run the Program Compatibility Wizard on programs or setup files on
a CD-ROM or floppy disk, your changes will not remain in effect after you close the
program."

I did not remove it. I didn't like the printer that much to begin with, so I
just donated it and bought a Canon ip1600 for about $20 at Fry's.

Lexmark provided nothing new at their website other than what they had at
their drivers and downloads area: which is where this all started. I called
tech support, which was not free, but they couldn't guarentee that my problem
would be solved. The tech was just reading from a manual: they didn't know
very much about the product. I just decided not purchase anything from them
again. I think it's important to buy from companies that support their
products. Support should be limited in the begining and should get stronger
as time goes, not the reverse.
