Temporary Solution for XP Users

Hi All,

This is a temporary solution for (most) XP Users.

- Click on Start
- Click on My Computer
- Open Local Disk (C
- Open Program Files
- Open the folder called "Messenger"
- Right Click on (green men) "msmsgs"
- Select "Send To" then "Desktop (create shortcut)"
- Close all Windows
- Sign in using the Shortcut

It is an older version of Messenger (4.7.0.3001) that came pre-installed
with my XP (all of them I think?) and still works.

To the WLM Team:
**DON'T** disable the Older One from the Servers, it is the only hope we have!

Not all features like "Send a File" work, but if you have lost your Contact
List or can't Sign In it is a small price to pay until WLM is sorted out.

If your's works please post with the Version Number. I'm not sure if Vista
has a pre-installed Old Messenger, would be nice if someone looked for it or
found a download on Google and tried it, post back if it works on Vista.

P.S.
Mr/Ms Microsoft (not Billy Boy),

I still have not heard about my Job Application? Does the above prove my
worth? (insert giggling).

Regards
Peter (doing the job for 30% less)

Nothing there! However, from the Control Panel:

Add/Remove Windows Components | Windows Components:

Check the "Components" list. My last entry is: "Windows Messenger". It is
not checked. I generally uncheck his box on all installs, as this is an
older, less secure version.

For many of us, WLM is sorted out. I've had no problems with the
14.0.8089.726 version.

The path to the folder, 'Messenger' does not exist, and there is no Control
Panel entry; I think it is safe to say that Windows Vista does not include
any version of MSN Messenger, or Windows Live Messenger. Unless an OEM
manufacturer includes "Windows Live Essentials" as a part of the included
'software suite' on a new computer.

I've created a folder, 'V:\M\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\', which has a running
collection of older versions of all software I've ever installed since I got
my first post DOS computer (Oct., 2001; HP Pavilion 6745C, running an OEM
install of Windows ME).

I've got, under the '\Windows 9x\' folder of the above:

mmssetup(4-6).exe
Setup(5.0).exe
Setup(6.1).exe
Setup(6.2).exe
SETUP(6.2-jp).exe
INSTALL_MSN_MESSENGER(7_0).EXE
Install_MSN_Messenger(7_5).exe

Under '\Old versions NT':

Install_Messenger(8_0).exe
Install_Messenger(8_1).exe
WLinstaller(8_5).exe

However, I am not going to try any of those versions on Windows Vista. I can
say that Vista is not listed as a supported system for Messenger 8.1 on the
MS site; and I did find couple of MS download sites:

http://messenger.msn.com/download/OS.aspx

Allows choice of 7.0 for Windows 98/Me, 7.0 for Windows NT, or 7.5 for
Windows XP.

<http://www.microsoft.com/DownLoads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cf49c56c-8b3e-4eae-9904-9505f47bed45&displaylang=en>

Supposedly downloads 7.0 for Windows XP

<http://www.microsoft.com/DownLoads/details.aspx?familyid=D78F2FF1-79EA-4066-8BA0-DDBED94864FC&displaylang=en>

Supposedly downloads 8.1 for Windows XP

None of which is an endorsement for any older version of MSN Messenger.

I offer the links on the basis of, /caveat emptor/. If you try the links,
get the files offered, and run into problems, you are on your own for
support.
