Terminal Services Service

Hello,
Has anyone run across the TS service getting locked up (Grayed out) so that
you can't stop -or- restart it? If we reboot the server we regain access
and can then modify the service.

I have been seeing this happen more and more all on 2003.

This is by design, and has been so since NT 4.0 TSE. Documneted here:

278657 - Terminal Services Cannot Be Manipulated
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=278657

Why would you want to stop the service, if you could?

This has only been occuring in 2003.

We make our dmz machines manual and start then only when needed.

Also we have been experiencing TS becoming stuck, again only since 2003 and
we need to either restart the service or the server.

Since the service is not supposed to be controlled that way, I'm not really
surprised to see you having these problems. Your playing directly with the
kernel and how it loads and functions by manually manipulating the service.

I'm not going to doubt you but, we rarely fired off the dms service and the
real problem is the fact that the TS Service is hanging for no apparent
reason on multiple machines. We wanted to restart the service as opposed to
restarting the server.

So the problem still remains as to why in 2003 we are getting hung TS
service.

Because technically the TS service is never stopped in Win2k3. As I've
said, your playing directly with the kernel. Messing with the kernel and
starting/stopping pieces and portions of it is never good.

I will shoot MS an note though to take a look at this thread and see what
their response is. but I'm willing to put money down on they will say the
same thing.

That is not my point. The service is hanging and we can't connect until
there is a reboot. I put in extraneous info that just confused the issue.

yes my point, to simplify, is your potentially playing havoc with the kernel
and your doing something that is most definately not supported. Again, you
shouldn't be surprised when you do something that is not intended or
supported. The behaviour you are experiencing is what Iwould expect by
doing what your doing. I may be wrong, which is why I've asked MSFT to take
a look at this thread but I'm willing to bet I'm not. there is a reason the
service is, by default, not able to be controlled like other services.

Yes, we do seem to have a crossing of issues here. Let me see if I can
understand the repro steps.

--Is the TS Service hanging after you tried to stop/start it?

--Or does the service hang after a reboot?

If you could provide step by step instructions, that would be very helpful.

It does seem that we are crossing issues here. Perhaps you could answer some
questions so that I understand your scenario better.

--Is the service hanging after you try to stop/start it?

--Is the service hanging after your reboot?

--What exactly to you mean by hanging? Does this mean you can't stop/start,
or do you mean that after a fresh reboot that you cannot connect?

If you could provide step-by-step instructions to reproduce the problem,
that would be immensely helpful.
