How do I induce WLM to include a ">" (or whatever) in the text of an email
that I am replying to (would show up at the 1st of every line in the email
that I received, but not in the next text that I add to the reply).

Thanks.

Use the older version of WLM or a different mail/news reader.

WOW - this seems like a pretty standard function to me. Even by MS standards
regarding
free software, this surprises me. While I hate to think about converting to
another
mail newsreader, this might do it.

I have the same problem - and from searching I think its a common gripe.
Shame because WLM otherwise looks like a nice improvement over Windows Mail
(which is what I had been previously been using). I wonder whether the loss
of this feature is part of Microsoft's strategy to kill off newsgroups?
Sadly it looks like I'll have to revert to Windows Mail ...

If not familiar with the history of the '>' in mail and newsgroup responses
for plain text...

The option to include the '>' was present in 2009(Wave 3) and also in
2011's betas(Wave 4). It worked in the former and not in the latter. The
option was removed from 2011 RTW versions(Initial Release and didn't return
either in the current RTW QFE1). The general belief(hypothesis) and most
likely as close to an explanation that will ever surface is that if the
option was present in the RTW product then Windows Live Support would have
to field questions on the lack of functionality of a selectabel option.
Therefore, removal of the option allows a sole, singular consistent
response from Live Support personnel - 'feature removed for design intent
purposes, i.e. won't fix'. The feature may never return unless continued
feedback is sent by users sufficient enough to rise above other request for
the next version release(Wave 5) and the Team is willing or capable of
convincing the bean counters to appropriate funds to restore or add the
code or fix in lieu of something else.

Since the feature loss also applies to plain text email messages(replies,
forwards) then the strategy to discontinue newsgroups in favor of online
forums would not necessarily be applicable.

Finally, WLM is first and foremost intended/targeted for use with Windows
Live services...newsgroups don't fall in that category in the grand
scheme..especially with increased communication occuring elsewhere(social,
blogs, forum).

Fyi...if one does need the '>' for mail replies and forwards....strangely
enough the 'insert >' feature exists in the Hotmail web UI. How long it
remains in the UI is unknown.

The other alternative for mail(not acceptable for most nntp folks taste) is
to use Html which places a vertical bar in front of previous text.

For those who are comfortable with html use in newsgroups..the Annex
Cafe(annexcafe.com) provides a moderated nntp newsgroup for Windows Live
Mail that welcomes both plain and html text posting. Registration is
required(signup with an email addess to obtain a username/pw).

Thanks Winston. Makes interesting reading.

Its a shame when the people implementing (or in this case not-implementing)
a feature don't understand why its so useful.

I suppose for emails its not such a problem, because its far less common
(IMO) to interleve replies with the original. Ditto email replies are
typically top-posted whereas newsgroup replies (by convention) are bottom
posted.

<snip>

Fortunatly it ('>') still exists in Windows Mail - but I've been looking for
better alternatives to that for a while. Sadly after playing with a new
newsreader for a while I always seem to come back to Windows Mail, for all
its faults (really just poor filtering) it still seems to be one of the
better tools around.

Exactly! In meetings with the Windows Live Team at several MVP Summits, I
was dumbfounded to learn that they never use OE/WM/WLM! :>( They use
Outlook or some in-house-only app for email - and almost never use Usenet at
all.

So they never did, and never will, understand why we Usenet users complain
about some of their newsreaders' obvious (to us) faults.

In spite of their claim, OE/WM/WLM is one area where Microsoft employees DO
NOT "eat their own dog food"! :>(

I suspect Outlook or Outlook in a server related environment(e.g.
Exchange/Sharepointe) would be the rule for Msft employes due to superior
message management and collaboration tools.

On the other hand, a quick check at some email properties shows more than a
few sent with WLM from Msft personnel though use is probably not a function
of using it for newsgroups(never was common for any Msft email client
within Msft)....but I suspect that use is more due to integration with
another Windows Live application Photo Gallery(which allows one in
conjunction with their SkyDrive to avoid and isp messages size constraints)
and WLM's ability to send Photo Emails(10 Gb max message size, 50 Mb file
max per attachment)
