I bought a new monitor with a native 1680x1050 resolution. It's works great
and I'd like to continue using this resolution. I've set IE's view\text size
to "larger" and that works OK. However, some sites set their text size in a
text/css in a stylesheet. These text are often too small to read well and
there
seems to be no way of making them larger.

Is there anything I can do about this short of changing the screen
resolution or getting reading glasses.

If not, does anyone out there think there's a chance that the html site
builders will wake up some day and realize that people are not reading their
copy because it's too small on the screen?

Hi,

Try this: Tools/Internet Options/General tab, click on accessibility and
enable the box to ignore specified font sizes.

Having been in on the ground floor of web site development in from the
early 90's one sore point from a development standpoint was a term
coined as "browser wars" where the two main players of the time,
Netscape and Microsoft ignored the de facto "rules" body ie, the W3C
and offered up what became known as browser extensions that allowed
web authors to fiddle and make certain effects happen IF the end
viewer of any web site had the "right" browser. Needless to stay this
created a royal mess where often web pages ended up looking different
depending on which browser they were viewed in or worse didn't work at
all as expected.

Anyhow, there is sort of an answer to your problem. I'll assume you're
using IE7 as your browser. If so, open the browser, go to Internet
Options, under the General tab, Appearance, then finally
Accessibility.

Note the window that pops up under Formatting. As a simple fix you
might try various combinations of three offered options to work well
enough for your needs. If not, keep reading.

The next and more complex option is to create your own external Style
Sheet. As fate would have it I struck up a friendship with Hakon Wium
Lie, who in the mid 90's worked at CERN in Geneva and was given the
responsibility for developing what became known as Cascading Style
Sheets. His dream was to make his Style Sheets, not HTML carry all the
styling and formatting of all web pages. Because both Netscape and
Microsoft were pigheaded and couldn't wait for the W3C to develop
specs his dream was never fully realized and we ended up with a
compromise at best.

So if you care to invest the time to learn how to make some basic
Style Sheet that can be applied to most web sites you view that is the
path. As you might expect and one reason I'm a vocal critic of
Microsoft is even though they claim to support it, external Style
Sheet support in IE7 is haphazard at best. So if you learn how, the
likely outcome might very well be disappointing.

I would like to thank both of you gentlemen for far exceeding my
expectations. You've made my day. And an extra bonus thanks to Ringmaster
for a very interesting history lesson.

I know a little bit about html and style sheets and may try writing one of
own one of these rainy days. But for now, THANKS AGAIN...

The other thing you can do is simply zoom the page. Opera, IE7 and FF3 all
zoom the whole content by default.

I much prefer this method - some websites break if you zoom only the text
(more and more, now that so many are using absolute positioning).
