I installed Roxio Easy Media Creator Suite 9, which includes Sonic DLA
(Drive Letter Access, a program/driver that makes burners look like a
drive letter).
Among the files of Sonic DLA is tfsnifs.sys

after this I installed Dell's service-app-recommended-and-branded Sonic
DLA patch a couple of months ago.
after today's windows update which caused a reboot,
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLA
contained an updated version of tfsnifs.sys dated 3/18/2007. this file
caused consistent bluescreens:
tfsnifs.sys stop 7e(c0000005,edb7ea4e,f7b6cb18,f7b6c814)
addr edb7ea4e base at edb72000 datestamp 419a571a7
this would occur before I could even get to the login screen of xp pro.
safe mode was useless: the keyboard was disabled.
since recovery console can only be installed before sp2, I could not use
it. my only recourse was the ultimate boot cd which I made the day before.
