My policy is not to use any 3-rd party anti-malware except Spybot S&D.
Windows Vista offers sufficient protection against malicious software
writers some of them I am sure watch this forum very carefully.

Download Microsoft Windows Baseline Security Analyzer. It is Beta 2.1 for
Vista and I think it is safe to download. Run it.

<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=F32921AF-9DBE-4DCE-889E-ECF997EB18E9&displaylang=en>

It will give you all your vulnerabilities, especially in your firewall
settings. You should read the report and if it suggests any changes, you
should consider them.
Your Windows firewall setting will be analyzed.

Download Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830). It
will want to run upon install. Choose the FULL scan although it may give you
a threatening message that it might take a few hours. It will scan your
entire computer in about half an hour or less if you do not have a lot of
stuff in it.

<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ad724ae0-e72d-4f54-9ab3-75b8eb148356&displaylang=en>

Some reassuring information: Malicious Software Removal Tool
<http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx>
The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove specific,
prevalent malicious software from computers that are running Windows Vista,
Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=890830

You can also go to Protection Center (Microsoft)
<http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/center/howsafe.htm?s_cid=mscom_msrt>
and click "Protection Scan." There will be a dropdown menu and a button:
"Launch Full Scan or Vista." You can do it if you wish.

Download and install Spybot Search & Destroy, a great piece of software
which is free for individuals but corporations pay fees. You may be asked
for donations but it is up to you. It is very up to date and every week you
will have to download new updates, sometimes even more often. You should
check for updates every time you run it. It will give you all su*kers
leached into your registry and ask you if you wanted to remove them. Many of
them have masqueraded themselves under MS Windows names like
Windows.something. Do not hesitate to kill them all. You can trust SB S&D.

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html
http://www.spybot.info/en/spybotsd/index.html

It also allows you to IMMUNIZE your system. It means that when you go to a
website and they try to download some kind of a Trojan to you SB S&D will
either kill it silently, or ask you if you want to do it or will kill it and
give you a notice. It is better to let it kill them all in silence.

Exerpts from SB S&D website

<quote starts>
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new
kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware
silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you
that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to
advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer
that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes
inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without
your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even
if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more
and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving
it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

To see a list of threats Spybot-S&D can remove, in the navigation bar at the
left click on Support --> Threats. For an introduction to Spybot-S&D, please
read the tutorial. If you fear incompatibility with other software you are
now using, although we can assure you that there is no danger you can review
our compatibility overview which lists some software whose compatibility has
been analyzed.

Spybot-S&D can also clean usage tracks, an interesting function if you share
your computer with other users and don't want them to see what you have been
working on. And for professional users, Spybot-S&D allows you to fix some
registry inconsistencies and extended reports. A list of all the
application's features is also available.
<End of quote>

After you installed SB S&D Windows IE will *****integrate***** it into its
Tools Menu. In the right upper corner of IE click Tools and you will see
Spybot Search And destroy configuration item. Click on it and it will give
you options to deal with the threats that are being downloaded.

Listen to Mark Russinovich's (MS) webcast: Advanced Malware Cleaning

<http://www.microsoft.com/emea/spotlight/sessionh.aspx?videoid=359>

Downloading any 3-rd party "free" anti-spyware program (with teh exception
SB S&D) is an invitation for a disaster.

The AV (antivirus industry) is on the way to the cemetery:
The slow death of AV technology:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/08/death_of_av/
Vista did it in.
Last note: it has been suggested around here by some unscrupulous trolls
that the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) and SB S&D do not
clean the registry. MSRT and SB S&D work on different principles. MSRT in
full mode reads RAM memory and detects patterns in the files that match
known viruses and other malware configuraions. This is why it takes so long
to run. If malicious code is detected it is also quite likely that it has a
representation in the registry. The only way to remove a particular piece of
malware is to CLEAN the registry off of this key.
SB S&D works by going thru the registry and locating known names that match
its database of malicious software. After all culprits are found the user is
asked if he/she want to remove the malicious software. If you say OK, then
the registry IS CLEANED of this set of malicious execs. The execs themselves
are killed in the respective folders.
In this sense both tools do CLEAN the registry. They do not do any
"housekeeping" which is absolutely superfluous and unnecessary. It is NOT
recommended by MS and most of the experienced users as well.

*******************************
Additional security measure
To prevent unauthorized breaks into your computer, go to Computer
management, and disable Disable "Internet Guest Account." Make sure "Guest"
account is disabled. It should be disabled by default.

It really depends on what the Sympatico software is. A lot of ISPs provide
rebranded security suites made by McAfee, Trend, or Norton. I don't like
any of those. I'm also not crazy about AVG.

Check to make sure your computer is really clean:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

I hope you uninstalled AVG before installing the Sympatico software. If not,
uninstall it now.

For antivirus protection I recommend NOD32, Kaspersky, or Avast (free). For
most people the built-in Windows Firewall and Windows Defender is adequate.
The main factor in being safe is you.

Hi Tracy,

Your friend is right in advising you not to download this program. All
programs of this nature that purport to be able to clean your system will
actually do the opposite and will, infact, install malware on your computer.
The same thing applies to registry cleaners. Since you already have a
reputable product on your machine, ie AVG, there should be no need for you to
download this product. Just ensure that you keep AVG up to date. As for
'sympatico' security software, I have never heard of this. Stick with AVG and
use a reputable anti-spyware program such as 'Spybot Search & Destroy'.

Actually AlexB knows very little about computers generally. His offers
of "solutions" and "help" should be ignored by anyone who doesn't want to
make their Vista systems more unstable then they already are.

Cheers.

XPanivirus is a known rougue anti spyware. Take a look at Eric Howes' site
on spyware, if you like to know more about this.

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/

> The same thing applies to registry cleaners.

They are not malware, ie. they will not infect your computer, but they can
certainly do a lot of harm in the hands of a user without a thorough
knowledge of the register. Better to stay away from them if you are not a
professional (in which case you will probably use regedit anyway).

I believe we are talking about Bell Sympatico's security solution, powered
by Radialpoint I think. I agree with Dwarf, stick to renowned products, such
as the one you have.

If you search this newsgroup for "best anti virus", "best anti spyware" and
similar, you will find lots of advice on which products to choose.

Do not run multiple anti virus (or firewall) programs, they may conflict and
cause connection problems or crashes.
Uninstall one of them, preferably Sympatico's bundle-ware.

>> but what will happen to the virus's in my vault????

The vault will be deleted, which is not a problem. The viruses will not
reinfect the computer, and you do not need to keep them in your freezer.

Tracy

As a Sympatico subscriber myself, I don't think that the Sympatico security
package is worth what they charge you. Cancel it.

Stay with AVG and the Vista firewall.

OK, now for other stuff.

Windows Defender you already have installed, and while it doesn't have the
best reputation, it will at least catch some stuff.

Adaware 2007, unless you pay for it, is a anti-spyware program that will
require you to manually update it and run it occasionally. It also sets up
in 'start-up' monitoring for whatever 'on the fly'

I haven't used Spybot in Vista because there was a time where the
immunizations conflicted with Windows Mail. I would imagine that the problem
has been fixed now. Spybot has a good reputation among XP users.

SpywareBlaster is a program where all you need to do is update it. There is
no 'running' involved. Essentially, it blocks access to whatever web sites
are contained in its database.

Hostsman is a small program which allows the user to manage the 'HOSTS' file
which does the same as SpywareBlaster. The difference is that you can manage
the list of blocked web sites yourself, adding to or removing at your
discretion. It can be set to automatically start when Windows starts and to
update automatically.

WinPatrol is a great little utility which gives lots of info regarding what
is running, what is in start-up etc. It also warns if a program or procedure
is trying to set itself up in start-up. Some malware will do this without
you knowing, but Scotty will bark and let you know.

All of the above are free. You can run all of them if you wish, but
performance could be take a hit with all of them appearing in startup.

I run AVG, Windows Defender, WinPatrol, Hostsman and the Vista firewall.

Tracy hi,

I run Vista on four computers every day. They are very busy. On two of them
I do constant stream downloads of stock price information form servers. One
of the machines is used heavily for Internet browsing among other things. I
do Internet browsing on two other machines quite a bit also.

The recommendations I gave are all based on MS software. Malke hates them
because it goes against her dishonest practice of promoting the software of
her employer Elephant Boy Computers (EBC). Computer cleaning software as
well as registry cleaning software have been widely condemned by specialists
and many users even in this news group expressed their opinion about the
practice.

It is also my understanding that EBC offers a virus protection software as
well.

Come to thing of it. Virus protection software is a major investment
requiring perhaps dozens if not hundreds employees and constant research We
all heard of Computer Associates, ZoneLabs and some other names And even
they create problems for operating systems. And here there is this unknown
entity whose only asset is Malke stocking this newsgroup peddling her
questionable software.

It is symptomatic the she got full support from well known Vista haters and
Linux/Ubuntu trolls: Al-Alias and NoStop. None of them will ever offer
anything except a denial, no proof no analysis of any sort, just spite.

Malke on the other hand has never voiced her objection to their criminal
activity around here. It means that she benefits from Vista bashing and it
is acceptable to her.

I ran Vista on four computers. My work is very computation intensive. All
machines are very buys.
