Hi all-hope somebody can shed light on this prob?
I run a GENUINE XPsp2 and have always been able to update it at will until
today.

Now when I run Windows update I get...
'Software Upgrade for Some Windows Components Required'

When I click download and install I get...
'Updates (KB892130) were unable to be successfully installed'

Download history does not record this failure!!

Clicking on more details tells me that this is the...
'Windows Validation Tool - 0kb , 0 mins(downloaded;ready to install)

So microsoft appears to be telling me that my ability to install a 0kb file
to set up a verification programme that I already have (according to the WGA
diagnostic tool!) to prove that I OWN my copy of Windows is now going to
prevent me ever accessing thier update utility??

Have I gone bonkers....because I just don't understand what is going on?
I am fairly pc literate but I'm afraid I'm not very confident about command
prompts or editing registry strings...

....or have I just goofed up and changed some setting without knowing it?
flo

floriccia,

I can't shed any light but if anyone does I'd like to be in your
shaddow......I have exactly same problem. I've already downloaded a/the
Validation Tool and no problems with subsequent update downloads. Been
working for ages. Now, It's being downloaded again but this time won't
install. What's going on????

My two IBM machines are truly valid. Nothwithstanding, Genuine Advantage runs
over and over and over and over again (ad nauseum). It always says it is
successful, but success is meaningless if, in fact, it has to do it nearly
every time I update.

Same with me. Mine is definitely a purchased product, but now I get the same
message.

Come on Microsoft, fix it!

I have tried to check the Genuine Advantage information, and I am quite
certain Microsoft is collecting private, traceable information about me by
collecting machine information. IBM can trace the collected information to
me. I think Microsoft is doing excess validation checks to ensure collection
of private data. The practice is clearly illegal in my country, so I do hope
they fix this soon.

Thats a worrying thought-
What information and why?
I'm starting to have serious doubts about the integrity of these
people....all I did was buy a computer and use it!

Anything unique enough in the computer from a hardware perspective that
Microsoft can use can be traced by IBM. I read once, but can no longer find
it, that Microsoft tracked the machine serial number as part of their
validation process. I am sure they did, but they may have been frightened
away from tracking it. Other hardware identifiers (hard drives, NIC's. etc.)
which are part of determining if an OEM license is valid is traceable by the
manufacturer. Microsoft denies that they track traceable information, but I
do not believe them.

Apparently it has something to do with one of these files not
downloading into the system32 directory.

GWFSPIDGen.dll
LegitCheckControl.dll
LegitCheckControl.inf

I checked my directory and could only find LegitCheckControl.dll, but
everything seems to work anyway.

Having a trawl through the internet, I came across an egghead who tried
the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/exeValidation2.aspx

Although it comes up "the download you requested is unavailable",
apparently it fixes the problem on the way.

Well, you never know.....
