Is there another way to make Win XP to work properly without the very large
risk that it will stop working all together ?

Some of us don't aspire to be computer mechanics, and just want a product
that works without constant tweaks.

Maybe they'll get it right in the NEXT version.......

Yeah, RIGHT !!!

Many of us that are not computer mechanics have had XP working just fine
since it we originally installed it. That includes installing SP1, many
hotifixes/patches/etc and then SP2.

It could be all your problems are self-inflicted because you haven't taken
the time to learn anything about your hardware and/or software.

And, by the way, I've been building these silly little contraptions since 1992.

Yo, Jerry, I know enough that I won't fix something that's not broken. My
gear works just fine and I intend to keep it that way, in spite of
Microsoft's "help".

First off, it doesn't matter how long you have building them - I know people
who write network protocols and encryption algorithms and have accomplished
some pretty cool things (connecting 8 cell phones together to create almost
T1 speed wireless Internet connectivity) - but are confused by simply
installing some operating systems and tweaking them to run at their most
efficient. Building them and using them and making them work properly are
different things. The guy who paints your house may not be able to build it
from nothing, but he made it look better and possibly last longer with his
contribution.

Also, you came onto these newsgroups like a troll and posted, essentially,
that Microsoft doesn't know what they are doing and implied all of your
problems exist - but as of yet - have not listed one.

Actually, I have implied nothing. I refer only to prblems encountered by
those in this group, and aquaintances who have tried the update.
I have virtually no problems, other than those caused by my expectation of a
working product for $100.00. I credit staying away from Windows Update for my
relatively calm existence.

I find it humorous that people blindly follow Microsoft's advice to walk out
on this shaky rope bridge, only to be surprised when it falls out from under
them.

You find it humorous that people who know nothing about computers and feel
no need to learn about it trust someone (or an entity) that is supposed to
(in their eyes) know things about this and support them?

Interesting.. I find foolish activity sad, not humorous in most cases. All
these users have to do in most cases in learn a minimum of standard
practices and their systems will work find. A couple of hours a month (or
less) will maintain their systems quite well. Many of these standard
practices can be automated. Most of them are common sense (you don't pick
up every free item and make it a part of your car or your home, why do it
with your computer?) It's a lack of concern and (in turn) knowledge that
makes these updates difficult. Microsoft cannot predict what an individual
user will have done to their system, what hardware they will have, etc.

I agree with your reasoning in your last post. You are probably correct in
thinking that a certain amount of problems are due to people "fixing" their
computer when it's not broken. I have, however found that when several
friends of mine, who are not compulsive "tweakers", have downloaded a
critical update, have spent hours making their system work again. One in
particular had to format, after being unable to undo the damage. I have found
that staying behind a firewall, and using virus protection, has been enough,
without the constant updates.
