I remember when vista first came out people were saying how great it was..
then slowly but steadily they started backpedaling...

now most of those same people are saying that they are waiting for SP1 to
save them... LOL

Sure, I still think it's a really good system for home users, but I told my
boss we shouldn't jump into it, because what we have already is doing the
job. Mainly, though, it's because most of my co-workers would choke on the
learning curve, as they call it. ;-)

I liked it at first, but as time goes on, I'm getting less tolerant. It
seems that the OS keeps morphing into a different animal, just about
every day or two. For example, I had an issue with my laptop from day
one with not dismissing a pop up message in the 7 seconds that its
supposed to. My wife's vista laptop would fade away the same message in
7 seconds, as it was supposed to do. Now, after a number of updates
from MS, the same message box remains on screen on her laptop (its a
notification that a mapped drive is unavailable, and shows up at boot
time in the notification area). Also, her IE7 just started halting
(this week) with the "stopped working" error. I did some research and
first tried turning off Protected Mode. That didn't help. SO I figured
maybe its an add-on. I removed the Norton Confidential browser, "show
norton tool bar", and also disabled the Phishing Filter. That fixed
it. I re-enabled Protected Mode, and it still works. I think later
today I'll revisit the settings to find specifically what is at fault,
Norton IS enabled on my laptop and I have no issues with IE7.

I've installed the so-called Compatibility and Performance updates, yet
see NO improvement in any function. File transfer times are identical to
pre-update. Boot times suck. The progress bar at boot up runs 31
times. The only boot or shutdown process that seems reasonably speedy
is going into sleep mode. I hope SP1 really does improve performance.
I'm afraid it won't because I've seen reports that SP1 contains the C&P
updates and that might be MS's only files for "improving" performance.
IF that's the case, there are gonna be millions of disappointed Vista users.

The indexer has been a joke. I posted a week or so back about searches
returning nonsensical results, so I rebuilt the index and that cleared
up, BUT rebuilding didn't fix the fact that only 768 files were ever
indexed (after 2 weeks). Files in indexed locations are ignored by the
index, so I finally turned it off. Now that it's off, I can find a file
in the blink of an eye, unless the search is across the entire C: drive.

regarding a learning curve, I decided to stick with Office 2004. I
really don't like Office 2007 enough to want to learn how to use it, nor
to spend another $130 on it. I'm not a fan of The Ribbon.

I'm very happy with Vista. It's tough to go to my laptop that uses XP.

Works fine for me. And I use it to manage servers and 250+ workstations
running a mix of 98, 2000, and XP

A great many.
However as is the nature of these newsgroups, you see problems and
other complaints similar as a hospital is full of sick people.

Windows Vista works fine on two of my older computers.

If you're running Office 2004 you're running a Mac for a start. I'm not
surprised you don't fancy trying to install Office 2007 onto it.

As for the ribbon, meh... I like it myself but it IS going to require a lot
of re-training and will be frustrating while you're getting up to speed. I
don't think anyone can deny that and people who rely on MS Office for
business certainly shouldn't ignore that.

All I will say, and I know you've probably already done this, is that the
ribbon should be judged by using it, not by static screenshots.

I've had no major problems with Vista since I installed it on my desktop on
02/02/2007. I keep trying to break it, but it just keeps going & going....
So far, I like it better than XP.
And it works great on my wife's laptop. I installed hers as a dual boot, as
she hates change, but we've never booted into the original XP.
