By the number of posts I am seeing with people having problems with SP1 I am
afraid to (attempt to) install it. My experience with Vista has not started
out great as I first dealt with the failure of the installation of those 2
prerequisites through WU. You really have to do a lot of searching into
these issues to figure out what the problem is. I got a brand new computer
and was very concerned that WU's were failing on me. Well, I bagged the
pre-reqs, but consider SP1?? Seems more like it should be avoided at all
costs. I mean what--should we just take a risk and hope that it works??
What is that about? Ok-I will get off the soapbox and ask my question.

Will there come a time when I am forced to install SP1?

It installed fine for me. Took a while -- over 45 minutes with several
restarts. But it installed, Vista booted, and as far as I could tell
nothing had changed. I accept on faith that I'm better off now.

You do realize that people come to these groups to resolve problems and that
almost nobody pops in to say "I installed SP1 and it went just fine"?
FWIW, I've installed SP1 on three of my machines, two desktops (1 Core2 and
one Phenom) and a laptop (Turion). All three installs went off without a
hitch.

I've had a smooth experience with SP1 on two PC's. Here's a list o
what SP1 improves for you

'Microsoft Corporation
(http://technet2.microsoft.com/Window....mspx?mfr=true

And then there's free tech support from Microsoft for SP1

Yet to see mine offered in Windows Updates as yet.
Don't see anything on the "reasons it might not be offered" list that would
include me.

Same here on Compaq (HP) Laptop - but their site says NVidia is holding up
release.

Desktop installed smoothly yesterday.

Thanks Bill.
I checked the link. Seems to involve Nvidia graphics/audio.
My graphics is Intel and audio is SoundMAX so fingers crossed!

I say go for it. If all else fails just restore. Create a restore point, then install SP1.
