Is there a limit in the number of messages live mail can download?

I subscribed to a new newsgroup and after synchronizing, the status bar of
windows live mail says "500 messages, 400 Unread, 7000 not downloaded". How
do I get the 7000 messages downloaded? When I try to sync again, it says "no
new messages found". Those 7000 are infact old messages and how do I tell
live mail to download them?

Hi, Jacob.

Just as in OE and WM before it, WLM sets this limit in Tools | Options |
Read. But in WLM, the Menu Bar is hidden, by default. To see the Tools
button, you will need to press <Alt> to show the Menu Bar temporarily, or
<Alt>+M,M to toggle it on (semi-)permanently.

At Tools | Options | Read, the "Get ___ headers at a time" defaults to 300.
You can change this to as high as 1000 at a time. OR, clear that checkbox
to get ALL the messages available. (In a busy newsgroup with 50,000+
messages, this can take a long time, even with broadband.)

Some news servers keep messages practically "forever"; others delete older
ones at some point decided by the managers of the server. These
microsoft.public.* servers usually keep about 90 days of messages. When
they are deleted from the server, WLM also deletes them from your hard
drive.

If you want to save messages permanently, you will need to create a Storage
Folder in WLM on your computer and Copy or Move the messages to that folder
before the server deletes them. (If you are a real packrat, you can create
News Rules to move them as they arrive to Storage Folders that you have
created.)

You didn't ask about email, but...
For email, the settings depend on the mail protocol for that Mail Account.
The only mail protocol I know about is POP3, but IMAP, Hotmail, etc., are
different. The settings are in Tools | Accounts | select your Mail Account
| Properties | Advanced. The box for "Leave a copy of messages on server"
is checked by default. (It was unchecked in OE.) Unless you check the
other boxes there, messages will be kept in your Inbox indefinitely - UNTIL
you Remove the Account! When you tell WLM to Remove the account, it will
pop up an innocent-looking box that warns you that it will delete the
Account AND THE MESSAGES IN THAT INBOX! Many users have just clicked OK -
and then have come here to ask what happened to there emails and we have to
give them sad news.

Yes, the max is 1000 messages.

Not so, you can clear that checkbox, which will allow download of all
the messages.

Another way is to change your Synchronization criterion to
All Messages. The reason that your second synch doesn't
work is that your first one determined where your "New Messages"
started and ended. After that in order to get them all,
e.g. ones before that period you either need to get more
headers using the Headers button (or equivalently
the Get Next 1000 headers Tools menu command)
or request *all* possible messages by using
a Synchronize command with the All Messages
synchronization criterion specified.

BTW as long as you are using a synchronization command
the Get Next setting can be mostly irrelevant and kept only
for sampling. In particular, you could have avoided the problem
you have by issuing a synchronization command, with any
synchronization criterion, *before* you downloaded any headers.
If you are just using a synchronize newsgroup command
one way avoid the automatic Get Next... is to set Work Offline
before entering the newsgroup.

Hi, Ila.

Unless you UNcheck the box - and get them ALL!
