The Microsoft Public newsgroups are not moderated. However, there are a number
of volunteers who typically review the newsgroups. The newsgroups are designed
for peer to peer discussions and support. Sometimes a question can be overlooked
and not replied to and sometimes it isn't replied to because the answer may not
be known immediately.

I asked for the error code 0xD0000142, I'm not sure that it's the same as
0x0000142. And I always use Google for seaching errors, but as I didn't find
such an error just during update process, I asked this question in the
Microsoft discussion group

I see. I can only add that there are more active volunteers in other
discussion groups then At least I always received answers there, maybe
these answers were half helpful, but anywhere I have received them and had
material for futhur thinking of :-)

Hello Vera,

This error code is very extremely rare. That's a big part of the reason why you did not get responses to your original post.
Let me also say, Stephen Boots' response is spot on.

Now, then, Vera: Was your Error "0xD0000142" displayed on screen while doing Windows Update?
or, did you find it in your WindowsUpdate.log file (which is the best place to find problem areas) ?

Post back here with details as to which specific update (or updates) are at issue, also your Windows version & service pack level, also same if MS Office components are involved.

Be aware that you can also get individual fixes/updates at the MS Download Center.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/

Suggest you flush your Automatic Updates download folder.
Housekeeping and cleanup steps:
Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

Use Windows Explorer. Go to C:\Windows\System32

If you have a sub-folder called * Catroot2 * (not Catroot) rename the
folder to CR2OLD. Or delete everything in that folder. Just make sure you do the right one.

(to clean up downloaded files for Automatic updates / Windows Update)
From main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

Logoff and do a fresh restart of Windows, before another attempt at getting the update !!

I have seen this error on the WSUS administrative console. I administer the
WSUS system of our organization (it's more than 1000 computers). I have no
access to every PC (this is work of other administrators), I see information
of the WSUS console and if there are some unusual situations I try to make
some conclusions and recommendations for those administrators who manage
user's PCs.

So, this error have appeared only on one computer with XP SP2 for such
patches as: KB920214, KB921883, KB922616 that arrived on August 8th, 2006.

Thank u about ideas concerning Catroot2, I haven't find just this
information in other places. Nevertheless I have worked already with
SoftwareDistribution when having other errors.
