is worth. I can't boot the laptop because of this utility.

Err what do you mean EXACTLY by "I can't boot the laptop because of this
utility"? When did this start? What happened before it started? Why not do
the repair?

If I might suggest ... the problem is almost surely not the startup repair,
it's the problem that startup repair is trying to repair (and apparently
failing to do so!) that is causing your problem. More detail than this will
be necessary to suggest a possible cure for your problem.

I can only assume that his laptop must be a HP or Acer
with a customized OS which in case of error goes
sometimes by default into "Repair".

You are correct and it is a problem for many since the Latest Vista
Automatic Update. The update does not complete then when the computer
restarts it automatically goes into "Startup Repair" which tells you that it
cannot repair the problem then shuts the laptop down. The problem is a
corrupted file that is attempting to be installed and this loop goes on
forever. I did all the known things like killing the pending.xml file but it
just gets recreated and the "Startup Repair" does it's thing again and shuts
down the laptop. The only way to get rid of it is to restore to an earlier
time but on this partitcular computer restore was off. If I could get rid of
Vista attempting to install this update all would be fine and I could
install the update manually. The only other option is to do a recovery of
the laptop and lose any installed programs. This really should not be the
only other option...
