Hello.

Trying to update Win XP Home Compaq with SP2. After some time i get this
message:
"There is not enough disk space on c:\windows\$ntservicepackuninstall$ to
install Service Pack 2. Setup requires a minimum of 1 additional megabytes
of free space or if you also want to archive the files for uninstallation,
Setup requires 1 additional megabytes of free space. Free additional space
on your hard disk an then try again."

I have 27gig hdd with 23 gig available.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

How much free space on the first primary system partition?
See the space requirements and verify you meet them:

Hello Jupiter.

I went to Computer Management\Disk Mangement. It shows drive C: as one big
27gig partition.

Thanks,
Tony

Tony;
If not done already, download SP-2 and burn to CD or order the CD, #1 on
this link:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

Make sure your computer is free of viruses, spyware and other malware.
The checklist referenced above can help ensure the computer is ready for
SP-2.

Yes... of course it is worth a try. MS is forcing this update
on everyone "for their own good", so you should go to any lengths
necessary to install it. And don't forget the MS Software Install Chant:

I wish my MS software will install
I wish my MS software will install
I wish my MS software will install

Twirl around ONE time, and throw a Silver Dollar over your LEFT shoulder.

Then, and only then, can you double click on the install executable.

"MS is forcing this update on everyone..."
Absolutely false.
What ever gave you that idea?
SP-2 can be easily controlled just like any other update.

Tony;
Reboot
Delete the "$ntservicepackuninstall$" file.
Reboot and then try again.
If you are asked to allow the creation of a file, be sure to allow it.
Be sure to disable everything unnecessary IAW the checklist.

FWIW there are two W2K users in ie6.setup who are reporting
a similar symptom. One of them posted his Active Setup Log.txt
and it shows that the CheckFreeSpace routine is somehow calculating
a negative number! I speculated that a negative number could appear
as a huge positive value if the sign of this erroneous value was ignored
by some other routine.

>
> Any help would be appreciated.

Look for clues in any logs the procedure creates or appends to.
Tip: I use two ways to figure that out when I'm not sure which filenames
are involved: either Run... FileMon perhaps filtering on the update
name or, after the fact, use Search Companion to find all files which
have a modification date of the date of the update, then sort those by
that column, which orders them right down to the minute.

If you just want to take a stab at something which might help
I would try to see if some modules need replacing, e.g. Run...
sfc /scannow Alternatively retry it under either a safe boot or
with a clean boot and see if that avoids the symptom.

<title>KB316434 - How to perform advanced clean-boot troubleshooting in Windows XP</title>

Something that I suggested to the other user as a way of getting
more information about the symptom was to try using up a lot of
the freespace and see if that changed the size of the negative value.
(If it doesn't then we know that the symptom is probably completely
independent of the environmental variable it is supposed to represent.
That in turn would throw suspicion on other ostensibly unrelated factors
such as third-party program interference, such as malware.)
Unfortunately I don't know of any convenient way of doing that.
Note, however that in order to get the value under 32 bits
(e.g. so the sign bit is definitely not set) your freespace would have
to be reduced to under 2 GB.
