What are these fonts?

Does anyone know when/why MS gave us a bunch of fonts such as "Batang &
BatangChe & Gungsuh & GungsuhChe" and "Microsoft YaHei?" There are many
more of these strange looking font names in my fonts folder and each font
takes up > 15,000,000 bytes. I tried to delete 1 or 2 of them but that's a
no can do. Was there a specific "hotfix" we applied and what is/are the
reason(s) for these fonts?

Those are standard fonts that originally came with Vista and cannot be
removed.

Mea Culpa - blame it on old age!

Why are you fooling around in the Fonts directory anyway? Are you
short on disk space? If so, eliminating 15Mb of space is hardly going
to be of much consequence.

The reason the names are so funky is that you can't copyright a font's
appearance - but you can copyright the name. So MS chooses oddball
names and gets exclusive copyright (I'm not sure why they care as
those fonts are nothing to write home about). If you double click on
the font files and look at them they are actually rather conventional.

The huge size for each one (15mb) vs a more normal font (10-800K) is a
little harder to account for. Even professionally hinted fonts don't
get anywhere near that size. More MS efficiency at work.

You're always whinging. And now you are blaming Microsoft for the Chinese
language?

The fonts are installed when you choose to display Asian languages, and
there are around 50,000 characters in traditional Chinese.

Still ****ed off that I proved you wrong about Startup Control Panel,
eh?

It's OK, you can admit that you were wrong. It will help you move on.
