Does anyone have a fix for IE8 after removing Thinkpoint? I got rid of the
crapware, but it required the removal of some of IE's files and now IE only
runs (sometimes) with no add-ins.

Thanks

Stupid question here, but have you considered going to MSoft and installing
IE8 again?

Yup - I even downloaded the separet file and ran it to reinstall IE - twice.
The trashed files have to be some of the add-ins, which are active-x
components. I CAN run the browser without the add-ins sometimes.

Can you remove the add-on(s)?

I don't use add-ons, at least not on purpose. I never accept the bizillion
tool bars that are offered with any of the updates. I keep my system as
clean as possible, and any speed that is lost by having to actually start
something manually is more than made up by not having the instability that
comes from the add-on(s).

I did that, and IE runs. The problem is that the program is so heavily
dependent on add-ins that its functionality is severely limited.

I've been trying to run IE without add-ins and connect to the update site to
see if I can update the system out of its problems, but since one of the
add-ins is the active-x program that interfaces with the MS update site I
get an error page that wants to diagnose my connection problems - it won't
even connect to the site.

In the past I've always turned off the System Restore function to save disk
space. I guess I've learned the hard way that I should have just left it on
and running in the background. I never needed it because I know better than
to click on links or install anything that's doesnt' feel kosher. I got
married about 3 months ago, and now there's someone else using the computer.

The solution to my problem would seem to be a data backup and operating
system restore if I can't patch this thing together. What else would I have
to do on a Saturday afternoon, huh?

Here's another little tidbit about the Thinkpoint virus/malware: I've
removed the Thinkpoint files from my machine, but the malicious registry
entries are still there, keeping me from connecting to MS Update site.

Here's a real ass-kicker - IE has been hijacked so that if I google
"Thinkpoint" and click on any link the browser always takes me to the web
site for "Stopzilla." It's like a burglar sending his loot to his home by
UPS.

I'd say it will be a cold day in hell that I buy ANYTHING from the
"Stopzilla" pricks!

Your machine has a virual enhancement. You hafta reload Windoze. I forget
exactly, but I'm thinking CONFLICKER.

I think that if you wanted to go to ANY website where the purpose of the
site was security, your machine would not go there.

Sorry for the bad news...

I recovered from this same problem a few months ago, but I don't remember
what I did. I want to say that I reloaded Windows, but on second thought I'm
not sure this is true. The symptom set included the inability to go to
Windows Update, or to any of the main sites offering virus scan software.
Use a second machine and do a google search on CONFLICKER. There are other
names for the virus, but this is the only one that I remember right now.

I got to a site that had a MS scan software and was able to get the browser
working again. Unfortunately I'm still unable to get to any security sites.
In fact I downloaded the MS Security Essentials program and IT can't connect
to MS to download the latest definition files.

That means CONFLICKER is still infecting your machine.

I'm still working on the CORNFLICKER thingy, but here's what I found out
about Thinkpoint:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/po...tid=2147637771

MS Security Essentials WILL remove it.
