I want to thank all of you on this site who are providing solutions to the
many problems encountered with Windows Update. My problem error code
0x8024001D when trying to get a list of updates for my computer. The
solution of stopping the automatic update service then changing the name of
the "c:\Windows\Softwaredistribution" folder to
c:\Windows\Softwaredistribution.old did the trick and updates now works
great. The only problem now is growing old waiting for my dialup connection
to download all 23 critical updates!!
My question is: Why does this problem occur in the first place. If you
don't need the Softwaredistribution folder in the first place, why is it on
Windows XP - especially if causes this error to occur???? Thank you again
for your terrific help.

Wrong cause and effect relationship. The folder is corrupted.
That's why you delete (or rename) it. As soon as you reconnect
to an update site it is recreated.

Thanks for your explanation Robert. That makes sense now, but how does it
corrupted in the first place? Sorry for the dumb questions but I am pretty
computer illiterate when it comes this kind of stuff. Thanks for your help.

Most likely due to program bugs.
