Thought I'd Fixed noninstalling Updates.....

But Sadly.....no!
Like lots of people I found that the WGA KB892130 would download but not
install last week so I was unable to access the Update site.

I found the setup file for this WGA file in SoftwareDistribution\Downloads
and installed it manually via the Installation Wizard.
I could then open the Update page to search for express/critical updates.

As it happened-there weren't any-so after all that there was nothing to do!!

HOWEVER-I have just attempted to install 2 Custom downloads (Non critical)
and although they are each downloaded to thier own Software Distribution
folder they would not automatically install and I got the same old
'Installation Failed' notification-but NO reference to them in my download
history.

I spent hours on consecutive evenings trying, with everyone else to get my
head round this and thought I'd cracked it!
So why O why won't these blessed things install themselves?
What have I done wrong.
I haven't -to my knowledge 'changed' anything to creat the problem and I'm
afraid I don't understand all this talk about 'permissions'.

Obviously I have only managed to manually install an update and not actually
fixed the problem.

Please Help..........I don't know where to go from here!

flo

For what it is worth, I am experiencing the exact same symptoms, with
KB904942, KB912945 and Microsoft.NET 1.1 and some related updates and fixes.

Microsoft Update downloads the files but cannot install them. The files
install nominally from the local source but update history does not reflect
the changes. The last successful Update took place on 01 March.

Hi Ron,
Thanks for replying so quickly.
Like you...I have KB912945 downloaded but it won't install.
I don't think it is just THESE updates that don't work-I think there is
something wrong with our pcs ability to 'auto'install them and I can't see
what we've done to suddenly have this problem.

Lots of people worked to address this problem last week (including me) but
in the end their were so many 'fixes' of varying complication that my mind
has now gone blank as to which ones worked to re-enable this messed up
install function.

I'm hoping some kind soul can point me to the simplest fix again!

Have Microsoft officially recognised the problem yet?
My head is spinning!!
Good Luck

Flo,
I finally got a quick easy fix for my problem from Sally Tang at Microsoft.
I've pasted her instructions below. Hope it works for you as well as it did
for me:

Dear Donna,
Thank you for your update. I am sorry to hear that the problem persists and
appreciate your time and effort on this issue. According to other customers'
feedback, this issue is related by the WGADiag2.exe tool. I also suggest
using the WGA diagnostic tool to check the issue
===================
1. Please open Internet Explorer and visit the following link to download
the WGA Diagnostic Tool:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

2. Save the WGADiag2.exe file to Desktop, and then double click on the file
to run the tool. After running the tool, please return to Windows Update and
see if the issue is resolved.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Best Regards,
Sally

No such luck for me...

Downloaded to desktop, ran it, OK'd the results, went back to WU. Decided
to try .Net 2.0 for a change. No joy - failed install, just like the 20 or
more times I've tried the Custom Install since DECEMBER 2005!!!!

Isn't there someone at MS who can get to the bottom of all these WU problems?

Here's my WGADiag2 results, in case an MS MVP should notice...
