Going Golfing but not with Vista

I purchased the latest 2007 version of Tiger Woods from EA Sports only
to find that it won't run on Vista (see below crash error) and the
response from EA Sports tech support is as follows: "Thank you for
contacting us with your concern. Unfortunately Tiger Woods 07' has
proven to be incompatible with Windows Vista. We believe this is due
to an incompatibility with DirectX 10 but that is still being looked
into further. At this time it does not appear as though this can be
corrected via a patch and will only change if Microsoft does something
to change the coding in Vista. I do apologize for any frustration
this has caused and I'm very sorry there's not more I can do to assist
you in getting Tiger Woods 07' to run on your PC with Vista." Error
    as follows:

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate with a NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS on
a new out of the box Dell Inspiron E1705. Running in XP Compatibility
mode does not solve the problem. Running as administrator does not
solve problem. Uninstall and reinstall does not solve the problem.
Any suggestions other than waiting for the first SP for Vista?

  2. Not sure why you think a service pack for vista will fix a game that doesn't
work and it's odd EA would says it's a problem with DX10, since you don't
have a DX10 card and the game is a DX9.0c game. I've got a few EA games ,
BF2 and 2142, and the Sims Life stories and they all work.

Did the game ask, or did you try applying the latest DX 9.0c runtime update
(Feb is the latest). They release a new update every other month
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...0C-5E44-4864-93CD-464EF59DA050&displaylang=en

Also, nVidia has had some problems with their Motherboard and video drivers,
I'd keep an eye on that as well. I just checked, but the nVidia download
    site is down for maintenance.

Things I would try just for giggles, is under User accounts turn off the
UAC )User Access Control), reboot and try running the game. Might turn off
the Aero desktop as well. If that do any good, then be sure to turn the UAC
    back on.

you didn't say, are you running the 32bit version or the 64 bit version of
    Vista ?

  3. Microsoft is unlikely to change the code.
EA had every opportunity to make their games Vista compatible and in this
case ignored it and left it to Microsoft who is unlikely to make a change
unless there are other significant problems.
Do not expect any Microsoft patch or Service Pack to resolve this, but
    hopefully I am wrong.
If you know others with the same issue, have them contact EA.
If enough contact EA, they may change their mind with a patch they say "not
appear as though this can be corrected via a patch".

You can contact Microsoft as well:

  4. Looks like it works for a couple of guys under Vista, but with an ATI
cards. The nVidia users are hurting.

  5. Also, there is a 1.1 patch. Though I really like this line on the notes

"... The full fix for this issue will be in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008. "

Nice ! And they talk about Microsoft's support sucking. "We'll fix this in
the next game" Now that's just crazy !

    markbyrn Guest

    Dale,

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, turning off UAC and
installing the 1.1 patch didn't have any effect. I'm running the 32
bit version and my DxDiag report is below - it states my version is
DirectX 10 and I had already tried installing or updating to (or back)
to 9.0c. Assuming the game works with ATI cards but not nVidia, than
the fault is now with nVidia and not with EA or Microsoft? If it's
really nVidia, I haven't experienced any problems with others games or
apps to this point. Unfortunately, I can't use Microsoft support as I
have an OEM version of Vista but I'm using Dell's support for what
    little it's worth.

  7. I'm not clear on why having an OEM install of vista means you can't use
their support. Not that they would be all that helpful. what other games
have you tried running ? You could download 3dmark06 from furturemark and
see if that will run. if it doesn't then you know it's most likely an issue
    with the video drivers.

I'm guessing that you are running the R142930.EXE driver from the dell site.
What was released on Jan 19 07, which is right before Vista's launch. I'd
keep an eye out for a newer version, though it may be a month or so before
    it happens.

Also, just a reiterate. You don't actually downgrade from DX10 to DX9.0c.
They are both going to be there. If you look under you're video drivers
    you'll see it's using the DX9.0Ex (.i.e. DDI Version: 9Ex). The runtime
update I mention, just refreshes that to make sure you have the latest
updates\DLLs that have been implemented by some games since the original
release of DX9.0c, Some games like FEAR won't run without it, thought it
gives you a missing DLL error, versus the error you are getting.

Another option is to try and disable, by way of the bios components like
your sound card, and unplug any external mouse, keyboards, USB drives, etc
to make sure it's not fighting with those.

    Dale,

I ran 3dMark06 without any problems (3DMark score of 3305) so it's not
likely a problem with the driver, but perhaps the default nVidia
control panel settings are causing the game to crash. Unfortunately I
have no clue as to what settings I could change that might get the
game to work. Considering the crash report notes the problem is with
dxwrap.dll, I doubt disabling components is going to solve the issue
    but thanks for the advice.

    Mark

  9. Well, wish I had the game so I could confirm or deny, but I don't. I can
only go off the guys in the Tiger Woods 2007 forums who said they have it
working. Might try posting over there and see if anyone has a nVidia version
working and what they might have done to get it working

There are some beta 100.64 drivers out on nVdia site if you want to give
    those a try.

Game doesn't work for me either with a nvidia card. Oddly, 2005 works just
fine and apparently so does 2006. It looks like EA did something in TW2007
that nvidia vista drivers don't like (or it's nvidia's drivers not liking
TW2007). EA claiming it's a dx10 MS problem is pure BS since people with ati
    cards can play the game.

That's strange. TW 2005 doesn't work for me - it just hangs after the
    splash screen.

I was beginning to think I was the only one with TW problems. I can run it
but all the grass is Black or the 3d part doesn't even display at all. I will
then get a display driver failed to respond message.

EA is a joke when it comes to patches and they probably just don't want to
fix it. Do they really think MS is going to recode Vista for them?

However I feel it's the graphic driver but who knows. I have a nvidia 7950
(something) and a Nvidia chip set so 'm waiting for real drivers from them
    before I blame EA.

Until then I will keep on duel booting to XP

First they say it is a MS thing then they say they will fix it in the next
    version. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I guess they have to do something to make it different next year.

I too have the same problem with TW 2k7. It was working fine until I
upgraded to Vista. Fear works fine but TW was giving me problems.
    I have a P4 3.4g dual cpu
    1gig ddr2 ram
    2 7600gs video cards

I manage to get into the game by using a no cd crack file that replaced
the tw2k7.exe file (make backup first before replacing) but now I have
to alt-tab out after each holes loads then back in to be able to see
    the game.

Thought someone might be able to work with this

Did you reinstall the game Under Vista?
I made a clean install and it works fine!
    So try it!

I also found it is better to do clean install of VISTA!
    And The Reinstall Everything.

Vista has issues yeah, But still rocks!

    Bye
