Grey Screen at Logon

    2 weeks ago I tried to logon my SBS2003 and found a grey screen. The grey was
    the same color as the logon background. But the logon box had dissapeared. I
    tried everything I could think of to get the logon box but ended up rebooting
    the server.

    I can get into the server using remote desktop connection ok.

    Today the same thing happened.

    Does anyone know what's going on?

    I am not using CA Antivirus and the Lass.exe has nor changed. Any other ideas?

    Thank you for posting here. Let's also thank Merv for the input.

    According to your description, I understand that the SBS logon screen grey
    out. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me
    know.

    Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
    resolve this issue:

    1. This issue is mostly cause by the antivirus software on SBS. Please try
    to uninstall any antivirus software from SBS, and then test this issue.

    2. Please check the following registry keys on SBS:

    [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "ScreenSaveActive"="0".

    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "ScreenSaveActive"="0"

    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Control Panel\Desktop]
    "SCRNSAVE.EXE"=""

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\syste
    m]
    "disablecad"=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    "DisableCAD"=dword:00000000

    Note: If the registry keys are not exist, please create them.

    3. If the issue persists, please try to do clean boot on SBS to narrow down
    this issue:

    To clean boot the problematic computer, please use the steps below:
    a. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
    (without the quotation marks). Click OK.

    b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to select
    the Selective Startup button.

    c. Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
    Selective Startup.

    d. Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft Services"
    box, and remove all the check marks from the remained Non-Microsoft
    Services. Please note that the Exchange services could be marked as
    non-Microsoft. Please do not disable those services.

    e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
    restart your computer in order to enable the changes.

    f. After restarting, please check whether this issue will reoccur.

    g. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
    services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause
    of this issue.

    If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
    help me collect some information for further investigation:

    1. Does the reboot can temporary resolve this issue?

    2. Does this issue happen when you reboot your SBS to Safe Mode?

    3. Gather MPS network report on SBS:

    a. Download MPSrepot_network from
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
    15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

    b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe on the server box.

    c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
    take 10~15 minutes.

    d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
    %SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

    e. Send the .cab file directly to me at

    According to your description, I understand that the SBS logon screen gray
    and you unable to logon SBS locally. If I have misunderstood the problem,
    please don't hesitate to let me know.

    Please understand that our newsgroup is an issue based service, meaning we

    Since you unable RDP to the SBS, please try the RWW. Please use the SBS
    administrator account logon RWW thru http://SBSname/remote/, then connect
    the desktop of SBS.

    | I am having the same problem as stated above. Sbs 2003 box has gray
    | screen of death. I cannot RDP into the box either. I can connect and
    | manage some processes through adminstrator tools I have installed on
    | one of my network pc's running vista. The server seems fully
    | functional besides me not being able to log in and manage anything
    | right now. Network shares look alright and all other services are
    | running. The only thing that's changed since my server was running
    | properly were some MS security patches that were automatically
    | deployed over the past 24 hours. Nobody was in the office due to the
    | holiday. I can't reboot the server until the close of buisness today,
    | so I am looking for some insight as to what's caused the problem,
    | before I reboot it and get stuck at the office all night trying to fix
    | it.
