m3u playlist - online streaming audio

I listen to a radio station in Hannover Germany www.ffn.de. When you stream
their audio it is via a media player like real audio or winamp. You click the
link and it opens up Winamp, say, and then the stream begins. This seems to
be by .m3u playlist file. Windows Media Player 11 has the capacity to default
for m3u files, but it won't play this one. An error pops up which says WMP
does not recognize this file or format, etc. I have to continue using Winamp
and sampling their goods. What is the problem? Please try the station and try
    the stream before posting. Thanks.

The link I checked was on a page labelled "webradio" at the top ?
The link called "HIER geht's zum Webradio" you mean ?

It is an m3u playlist link to http://212.58.34.245:8000/radio_ffn.mp3

I saw that a couple of times in WMP11, yes.

However I left it a short while and clicked play a couple more times
and it played OK then. It also seemed to open OK from the File -> Open
URL once it had played before - but again I had to manually click the
Play button rather than it starting automatically.

When starting the previously closed player from the link in firefox, I
could always replicate the error, but waiting a few seconds then
clicking play manually seemed to work.

I think (or it looks like) there needs to be a certain amount of the
content loaded before it can be played, or you see the C00D1199 error
    code.

I'm not too sure if it's because of the confusing trailing '.mp3' on
that URL, which in theory isn't needed if it's a stream rather than a
    static file.

It *can* be played, be persistent.
Definitely an odd one though !
