MS Update: "Checking" for latest updates forever

Discussion in 'Windows Update' started by Milhouse Van Houten, Jun 11, 2005.

  1. Just upgraded to MS Update from WU on my already fully-updated SP2 system,
and it went well (after a reboot) except that when I go to actually check
for updates via MS Update (custom or express), the animated progress bar
"Checking for the latest updates for your computer..." never completes no
matter how long I give it. Previously, WU would never take more than about
10 seconds on this screen. It's as if the server is down, but I've tried
this several times over the last day or two to no avail. I checked the WU
log and there's only positive things there, no signs of errors or problems.
The other functions of the page work fine, such as the history and change
    settings.

Is MS Update working for you guys now?

Don't think so, since I never installed the beta version on this machine.

Do you have a firewall that needs to be told the website has
    changed?

Also, try disabling Microsoft Update. Execute windows update and
your PC should revert back to windowsupdate. If that works, try
downloading and installing MS Update again.

To disable MS Update: Go to update.microsoft.com and click on
Change Settings in the left frame. Page all the way down and
click the box that says to disable the software.

No, fortunately I don't bother with software firewalls.

Yes, I saw that and will try that next, though a couple other people have
reported this issue too, so I'll wait a little longer to see how things
    shake out here.

Thanks, Alan! I disable WU (or MU???), than reboot (for sure), than it was
install automatically and now works (even the web interface).
