Where do the "star" ratings associated with songs in a play list originate? I
have some home brewed voice recordings of my own singing that have a rating
associated with each one. Although I'm no Frank Sinatra by any stretch, a
couple of these are rated with five stars. Others are rated with less. The
ratings do seem to correspond with the quality of the recording, the better
ones getting more stars, the not-so-hot getting less.

Before I run off to audition for "American Idol" and get the hook, can
    someone enlighten me?

Ratings start as 3-stars automatically but in gray. Any gray rating has not
been set by the user. Once you listen to a track all the way through one
time, it will automatically go to 4-stars. I am not sure of the rules for
when it will automatically go to 5-stars but it will happen.

I avoid the whole mess by immediately rating all my tracks as 3-stars when
added by multi-selecting all un-rated or those only automatically rated by
WMP - in other words, the gray and not the gold stars - and then right-click
on the selection and choose Rate from the context menu.

Then, I rate the ones I like higher and the ones I don't like lower as my
    whim strikes.

    Hope this helps,
