Why are some links in emails clickable and some not

Maybe I don't use the right terminology when I say 'clickable.'

In any case when I received some emails with links I can click them to go to
    the required page.

Other times I have to cut and paste them into the address bar.

    Why does that happen?

From friends? From a company? Hard to say, but my guess is that the
ones that aren't clickable are sent in "plain text" encoding.

Yes, from friends and family....personal emails

(links sent in emails from companies and the like are always clickable)

So, would the senders know that they are using 'plain text encoding?'

Would I know when I am doing it?

and, er, what is it exactly?

    Hi, Olinda.

See the thread, "Emails with Missing Links". started here just last week
(4/26/12) by "Bill". We spent a few days hashing out this exact issue.

    Hi RC,

I am aware of that thread but it's not exactly the same issue.

My default setting is NOT to view messages as plain text.

Sometimes the emails I receive come with clickable links; sometimes they
    don't.

Yesterday I received an email from a friend with non-clickable links.

But when I went into options in WLM and ticked the option ‘view messages as
plain text’ the links he sent me became clickable.

So, as the previous person in the thread suggested is it not the case that
the answer lie with the sender's setting rather than the receiver?

That is usually the case, though the point made was that it some cases the
    recipient's settings have a bearing.

As far as your link becoming clickable when viewing in plain text when it
wasn't in html..you'll have to explain or provide an example. Are you
certain that if you hold the shift or Control key in conjunction with a
supposed 'non-clickable' link that the link still doesn't open a new browser
or tab within an existing browser window ?

And possibly related, do you see anything else in the message with the
unclickable link (Safety, Show Links, Safe Sender, links disabled etc.)
