Windows service won't uninstall

On Win2000 Server, I have a Windows service ( not a web service) which was
build with VB.NET 2003, and to use the .NET Framework 1.1. This service was
first installed using the MS .NET InstallUtil tool, which I believe just
registers the service with the Windows Service Manager. The service will
not start, giving no error. I look in the Computer Management console,
under Services, and it is listed, but not running. I run the MS .NET
InstallUtil tool to uninstall it, but it will not uninstall either, with a
message "uninstall failed." I've rebooted, but no the Service remains
registered, but won't start. The startup is set to manual. Any suggestions
on how to forcefully remove this service from Service Manager? And by the
way, the same version of service executable file installs and starts
perfectly on 2 other servers, which appear to have the same configuration.
    Thanks in advance for anything.

Delete it from the registry service subkey
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services

After the service name key is deleted from
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services, the service remains in the list of
installed services in the Services Management console, and listed by the
"net start" command. I assume the registry deletion is only picked up on a
    reboot.
