Timeout when sending mail with attachments

Have WLM 14.0.8064.0206 on WinXP SP3.

When sending a message with attachment (a 80KB word document) to my SMTP
server,
the progress bar consistently stops near the end of message and timeouts.
Messages without attachment are sent successfully.

The error details are:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection
Subject: ....
Server: 'mail.messagingengine.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0F
Protocol: SMTP
Port:465
Secure(SSL): YES
Socket Error: 10053

The same attachment sent from the same machine to same server by Outlook
2007 is sent smootly and instantly.

This resembles me recent complaints in microsoft.public.win32.
programmer.networks suggesting that
the wininet API become broken. Same symptom there: a ftp transfer runs
almost to the end, then hangs and timeouts.

Any thoughts?

Regards,
--pa

"Unexpectedly terminated" is usually caused by interference from an
antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus should be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus should be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

Thanks, Gary.

I have the MS Security Essentials only.
All realtime protection options are on.
This problem does not always reproduce for me. There are days when it
reproes several times in a row, even after restarting LWN - typically when I
urgently need to send an important file.
Today is not a such day...

MSE should be 100% compatible (it's what I use).
Do you have any other third party security products like anti-spyware?
Did you have Norton or McAfee antivirus installed prior to switching
to MSE?
