Hi all,
just thought id share my experience on installation where a PATA raid 0
array on an nforce 4 mobo is concerned:
In short:
in my experience vista on an nforce 4 ultra raid 0 (pata) array will not
work yet. Do not expect reliable results. For some reason also the nforce
beta drivers for vista (which supposedly include sata support) do not work -
perhaps because i had raid turned on? Best driver and the one im using now
is the latest WHQL XP build. (6.70). Do not expect your raid array to work
properly if at all.
If anyone has experienced differently, please let me know! I hope this
saves someone else some time and effort...
Below is exactly what i went through to find this out.
I tried to do the right thing and downloaded the nvidia nforce beta drivers
which included a new build of the raid drivers for vista (note these were the
pre june 29th release which included full pata support).
I had many unsuccessful attempts installing vista to my raid 0 drive with
errors at the 'extracting files' stage, i could not figure this out.
I tried vista on my sata drive first without loading the nvidia drivers,
this fails on first reboot - *you need to specify the nvidia drivers at
install if you want to still access the sata disks*
Installed with the nvidia drivers to my sata disk ok, but was still getting
heaps of errors if i accessed the raid 0 drives. At this point i noticed
that nvidia had updated their nforce vista beta. So i downloaded this.
Completely removed vista, including restoring my boot sector etc. Attempted
to reinstall from xp using the new drivers, upon reboot vista could not find
any hdd's... really great considering that was what the new drivers are for...
Started installation again, but this time used my WHQL copy of the drivers
(6.70). Installation to the SATA disk went quickly and without a hitch.
Vista worked quite well. However now sometimes when i access my raid 0 my
system becomes slow and the hdd light gets locked on. I can still get into
the drive but i can take a while to access. Inevitably i get a BSOD for
'driver_power_state' if the system tries to sleep, or i get a bsod for
'machine_check_exception' on shutdown while this is occurring. Interestingly
enough i think that it is locking up the pata controller (hardware side) as
sometimes even a hard reset does not clear the locked on hdd light.
This is where i am at now and i do not know what to try next. Hopefully
nvidia release a new version of the driver again soon....
