Today's Junk Mail Filter Update

Today's Junk Mail Filter update, and last month's did not install on my
home machine or the 65 machines at work.

It's a joke. I did the "support" think with MS last month, and they
wanted me to uninstall and reinstall Outlook 2003! Right, take a hike.
With what are likely unknown thousands of their users unable to install
this update, who much sense does it make that the users have a problem,
and NOT MS and their patches?

Somehow, I doubt I'll ever see a Junk Filter update install again. Too
bad...time for a 3rd-party anti-spam product, I guess.

Troubleshooting Suggestions:

Office Update fails to Install with error 0x51F
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...=en&IsMu=False

Office 2003 Tool: Local Installation Source Tool
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Try downloading and installing the update directly:

Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB916521)

Have to agree with Kyle, you can download this update but you cannot install
it even manually.I tried all your suggestions Carey but unfortunately none of
them work.I'm now stuck with an annoying auto uppdate that keeps trying to
install and failing. Thanks MS,I really needed another pain in the neck on my
pc which I can't get rid of.

If you have Windows XP, these are suggested steps to clean up after a failed update attempt.

Housekeeping and cleanup steps:
Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

Use Windows Explorer. Go to C:\Windows\System32

If you have a sub-folder called * Catroot2 * (not Catroot) rename the
folder to CR2OLD. Or delete everything in that folder. Just make sure you do the right one.

(to clean up downloaded files for Automatic updates / Windows Update)
From main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

This problem apparently is NOT limited to only a few users of Microsoft
updates. I have encountered the same problem. Installing the update under
reference from Microsoft Update failed. Installing it from Microsoft Office
Update failed also. After obtaining Windows-KB913433-x86-ENU.exe from
Microsoft Download Center, i.e. the Link as suggested by Carey Frisch,
installation failed also. A few of us took pains to write here. There must be
many many others encountering the same problem who preferred to remain
silent. In days and weeks to come, when more and more people attempt to
install the update under reference, they may well come across the same
problem. Is Microsoft sure that it is NOT a problem with the update ITSELF? I
wonder. Do you?

The interesting item I did notice before clearing Catroot2, etc. was that
even though May was the first update to fail and April the last to
successfully update, April did not show up in my updates list within control
panel.

Kyle,

Give this a try. (Assuming you have Win XP).

Start button > select RUN> type in SERVICES.MSC

The following services are needed by the processes at Windows Update. In services management console ( services.msc) they must NOT be *Disabled* in the Startup type.
They need to show a startup type of Manual or Automatic.
Here are the services & their Startup types:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS) Manual
Cryptographic Services Automatic
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Automatic
System Restore Service Automatic

Other suggestion: In Internet Explorer browser > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.
Click "Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone" to *clear* the selection.

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

http://update.microsoft.com

Click OK. Apply changes.

Also, be sure you are logged in with administrator rights when you go to Windows Update.
And be sure Outlook is closed before getting the update.
