Toshiba? or Windows Vista?

Only a few days ago, I got a toshiba notebook laptop, with the Windows Vista
system installed on it. It was bought in America and sent over to the UK for
me.

Admitedly, I am not the most computer literate person, but I know the basics
and a little more.

My problem is this:

It has only been a couple of days and the screen has blanked out twice, and
I have had to restart the computer by pressing the 'on/off' button for 10
seconds. I subsequently lost all unsaved work.

I also suddenly had that dreaded blue screen appear for no apparant reason.
The screen that says there is something wrong with one of the installed
devices...etc.

I want to know what the best thing to do is now?
Should I return the laptop and ask for my money back?
Is this a problem with Toshiba? Or a problem with Windows Vista? Or is is
me??!

If someone could advise on what I should do I would be very grateful.

Kind regards,
LM

It's a new computer that isn't working properly. It doesn't really matter
where the problem lies. Toshiba is responsible for fixing it. I'd contact
their tech support and see how to proceed. It may be a simple fix or it you
may need to return/exchange it.

Can you boot into Safe Mode and check the Event Viewer log to see if there
are any issues relating to device failure? I personally would get in touch
with Toshiba about the problem, since it could possibly be a defect with the
hardware or just a defective device driver.

A brand-new system should not behave so - return the laptop for warranty
repair or replacement.

Hi!
I just bought a new Toshiba laptop with Vista Home Premium 32 bit
preinstalled. I had the same problem with it simply 'disappearing' after a
few minutes of idling. And a few more odds and ends to deal with.
Basically, it was the Power settings for the mobile system. If you leave it
in the 'sleep' mode for a half hour, it then hibernates. Coming out of that
seems hit and miss. Since I normally use the machine with the power supply
plugged in, I chose "Performance" options, and set all those to never turn
off, never sleep, never hibernate, etc. Go into the advanced options for
Power in the control panel too, there are a lot of items there not in the
basic settings. Also, made my own settings choices for running on Battery.
In this I allow Sleep, turning off HD, throttling CPU, fans, turning off
display, but never hibernate. I chose Shut Down instead. Also, check and
set the Power Button items, as the defaults seem strange to me.
That solved my problem with the black screen. However, if yours is simply
'going away' while you are actively using it, then that's a very different
problem. And is likely a faulty device. In this case, it should be
returned.
HTH,
McG.
