Track length isn't there

Most of my music library tracks work, but the others don't have a track
length, which bugs me specifically because I can't skip to a certain part of
a song without listening to all of it, and it won't scrobble to Last.fm.
The length does however show up if I put the song in a playlist. I have no
idea how that makes a difference, but it happens.
I have WMP 11 and Windows 7.

What's the file type (file extension) of the affected songs (MP3, WMA...)?
