I have a new computer with Windows 7 Home Premium, Internet Explorer 8, and I
downloaded and installed Windows Live Mail.

My old computer has Windows XP, Internet Explorer 7, and Outlook 2000.

I want to transfer all my emails, email folders, contacts (address book),
rules, etc. into my new computer.

In attempting to do this numerous ways I have discovered I have .pst files
from the Hotmail account that came with my computer in 2002, .pst files from
when I used Outlook Express until 2006, and two .pst files, outlook.pst dated
today and archive.pst dated years ago.

One online web site I found told how to get the .pst files of the old and
onto the new and import using the windows live mail. But my Windows Live
Mail does not give me the option of importing my Outlook 2000 files, it only
has three file type choices, Outlook Express 6, Windows Live Mail, and
Windows Mail.

How can I get my old email files and information from my old computer onto
my new computer?

WLM does not have the option to import Outlook pst files.

Outlook does not have the option to export messages in format importable by WLM.

Is the old computer still available ?
If so, import your messages into OE from Outlook. Copy the OE store folder to your Windows 7 machine(preferably to folder you have
full permission rights), then use WLM to import the messages.

Your only other alternative may be to install a later version of Outlook on Windows 7(e.g. 03/07) and load the pst file and use
Outlook instead of WLM.

Was your XP computer used when you bought it? New computers do not come
with Hotmail accounts.
Outlook Express does not use pst files. Do you mean dbx files?
Early versions of WLMail could import from pst files.

Hi,

Lots of confusion in this thread. :>(

> My old computer has Windows XP, Internet Explorer 7, and Outlook 2000.

Since it has WinXP, it also has Outlook Express, which is an integral part
of WinXP and is NOT the same as Outlook. (No need to download OE, as you
suggested in your second post; you can't do it, anyhow.) OE uses .dbx
files; OL uses .pst files; WLM uses .eml and .nws files; none of these file
types mix with each other.

Neither Vista nor Win7 will run any version of OE. WinXP, Vista and Win7
can all run Outlook and Windows Live Mail.

You have several possible migration paths from WinXP/Outlook to Win7/WLM.
You can use your old computer to import from WinXP/OL to WinXP/OE, and then
import from WinXP/OE to WinXP/WLM - and finally from WinXP/WLM to Win7/WLM.
Or for the second step, Copy WinXP/OE's .dbx files (ALL of them, including
Folders.dbx) to Win7 (or to a folder that you can access from Win7, such as
on a thumb drive), followed by Importing those into Win7/WLM.

Or, as Winston suggested, since you are already familiar with Outlook, just
keep using that, rather than WLM, in Win7.

No - I posted wrong - I made a hotmail account shortly after I bought the
computer.

Yes - Hotmail and Outlook Express Folders had .dbx files and Outlook had .pst

Hotmail:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\ApplicationData\MSN6\UserData\{l ong set
of numbers}\Hotmail

Has 33 .dbx files

Outlook Express:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local
Settings\ApplicationData\Identities\{long set of numbers}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express

It has 15 .dbx files that most appear to correspond to my email folders -
There is also a clenaup.log text document

Outlook is in 2 folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Outloo k

Has .NICK, .RWZ, .FAV, 2 text files (Adult Content Senders and Junk
Senders), 2 .dat files and 1 file named OutlPrnt

and

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local
Settings\ApplicationData\\Microsoft\Outlook

Has outlook.pst, extend.dat, and archive.pst

Yes I looked i my Programs menu before attempting to install and found
Outlook Expresss and am planning on using one your suggested Migration Paths.

I would like to continue using Outlook and install the newest version that
is compatible with Windows 7 Home Premium but I don't want to pay for it. My
new computer did not come with Office or any email. They suggest Windows
Live Mail which i've downloaded (with several other programs, movie maker
etc.) and installed.

So i'll try the migration you suggest.

Hope it works - Thank You very much you guys are etremely helpful!!

ok - thought i had it from all that i've gathered the last 2 days but i've
missed something and am becoming overwhelmed. I saw how somewhere but can't
find how to:

Export all my outlook 2000 email messages, folders, settings, rules, etc.
(whatever possible) on my old machine - and - then import them into oultook
express 6 on my old machine.

I then want to copy the outlook express 6 files on my old machine onto my
thumb drive and then paste them in a folder on my new computer - and - then
use windows live mail to import the outlook express 6 files.

Can I do this and if so how?

You can't download and install Outlook Express on Windows 7(nor was it suggested to do so).

If the old pc is still available, then Outlook Express should already be present(it was included with XP/IE6)

Your path should be
XP system
Import Outlook Messages using OE
Verify messages were imported
Find OE message store and make a copy of the entire OE message store folder

Windows 7 system
Copy OE message store folder to Windows 7 system
Use WLM to import OE messages

The only other option is to use Outlook(not Outlook Express) on Windows 7. Copy the *.pst file from the XP system and replace the
*.pst file in the Outlook store(in your user profile) on the Windows 7 system. Once copied, open Outlook.

You didn't inform us that you were using MSN Explorer(MSN Premium) for Hotmail
- MSN6\UserData\etc....

For Outlook....the two necessary files are Outlook.pst and Archive.pst

They need to be present on the XP machine for Outlook Express to import Outlook's messages.
