I don't understand why Microsoft has not provided an easy to use program for
all of us beginner and intermediate users to transfer the OE files to Windows
Mail??? What is one supposed to do?? I do not feel comfortable with some of
the methods suggested elsewhee on the internet. Is there someone at all who
can suggest a step-by-step- way of transferring files. I could not believe
that this has turned out to be such a big problem. By the way, I have two
hard drives on my computer. Drive C, the nee one, with Windows Vista
installed on it, and old hard drive on which all my OE files sit. HELP!

Use the import tool in Windows mail & point it towards the OE files, it will
import all of your emails.

Actually, it won't. I've tried. Fortunately, Thunderbird has no
trouble importing OE files.

I've used WM to import emails from a dir containing OE files backed up on a
flash drive.
Can't explain why it didn't work for you.

But I prefer to backup email via drag & drop to dirs with the files saved as
eml files.
That way lots of email apps wil let you drag & drop them across.

I must confess I also found the Vista import of .dbx more difficult than
it ought to be. There seem to be several reasons why the Vista import
command declares that there are no dbx files.
1. The old OE 6 files were copied to a place outside of documents, i.e.
outside of the user admin sphere of influence, so recopy them inside
the "user" space.
2. If you used explorer to find those files and you left that explorer
window open on that directory, then Vista considers that busy but gives
the same error as 1! So you can go in circles here.
3. The double path entry had me fooled, especially when you cannot
edit it, but must start again.

But there are further problems. When the import finally happens, then
everything is imported into a new "imported folder". One then has to go
in and move files out into their proper place which if you have several
thousand archived emails is rather tedious.

Finally to add insult to injury there are errors in the import process,
sometimes whole directories are not copied.

Check each one.
