Registered.. Registration is optionsl... Activation is mandatory.
There is no limit to how many times you can activate a single copy (any
copy) of Windows XP on a single given system.

In general, the only rules normal people need to concern themselves with
are:
- *if* your license is an OEM version and has been previously installed on
a system, you cannot install it on a new system even if the old system
doesn't have it on it or has been destroyed/lost/stolen.
- *if* your license is an OEM version and you want to reinstall on the same
computer, do it. What comprises the same computer is up for debate - but in
general, I would shoot for the same motherboard. That is by no means a
definition of a computer, however.
- *if* your license is an OEM version - you get no support from Microsoft.

The above things cause many discussions all over the Internet.

- *if* your license is a retail version and you want to reinstall - do it.
If it has been 120+ days since you last activated this copy, then
re-activating over the internet will be no problem. If it has been less
than 120 days, then you may have to make a phone call to activate it. Same
computer, different computer, whatever.. Just as long as it is only
installed on a single computer for your single license at any given time.

Simply install Windows XP on your new hard drive and activate
it when prompted to do so.

I tried the same but it says that the serial number is already registered
and then does not allow me to register the same.
Although the name and other details during registration process are the same
as in the initial process.

If the internet activation procedure fails, then follow the procedure to "activate by phone".

Hi;

You were misinformed. Windows XP can be activated (note this is what
you need to do, not registration which is a different thing) as many
times as needed given honest user needs.

Install XP clean on the new hard drive, and once you have
network/dial-up information set you can activate online. If that fails
you can activate by phone --- takes just a few minutes.

Just partition the new HD as desired, then insert the Windows XP CD and
begin the install.

Why?
Your OEM copy will probably work fine.. You aren't replacing the entire
computer - you are replacing a hard disk drive.
Think logically.

If it is a true recovery CD and does not depend on some hidden partition on
your now defunct hard drive - more than likely.
