Transferring Roles

Hello ...

I have two Windows DC's ...both are running Windows 2000 Server (sp4).
Server "A" is old and being decommissioned.

Server A holds all of the roles (Schema master, PDC emulator, etc,,etc). If
I run DCPromo to change the role of the server from DC to a "server", will
that transfer the roles to the other server or do I need to transfer the
roles before running DCPromo?

Hi Nick,

correct - when you de-promote a DC (Server A) and min 1 else is still
available in the domain, all relevant roles will be automatically
transferred.

Hello Nick,

Even it should be done automatically i would do it manual, to have control
over it and see that it worked correct. Follow this article for transferring
FSMO roles:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801

This article also applies for Windows 2000. Additional make sure the existing
DC is also Global catalog and DNS server for the domain.

Check out an artcile I have on decommissioning a DC, there can be more than
just transferrring the fsmo roles.
