Transferring User Data

Hi

Is there a way I can transfer data from one user's account to another user's
account? For example, User A is leaving the office soon. User B will be
replacing her then. I have already created a new user account for User B.
Once user A has left, all her documents, files and folders must be
transferred to User B, including User A's Shared Folder Security schedule.
But User A's account must not be deleted as all her emails will be forwarded
to User B. Is there an easier way I can achieve this? Please remember that,
in effect, User A must be replaced by User B everywhere.

I am not sure if it will work this way.. Is it possible for me to delete
User B's account (after User A has left) and then edit User A's account with
User B's information? Will that update the details of User A with User B
everywhere? And User A's emails can be set to be forwarded to User B on the
POP3 server. Is that a good idea? Any better suggestions? Any help will be
highly appreciated. Thanks!

What I'd do is this:

1. On the server, copy user A's home directory to user B's home directory
(and make sure the NTFS permissions are set properly). I'm presuming all
user A's data is on the server, and is not in the profile folder (I
recommend folder redirection in any case).
2. Grant user B rights to open user A's mailbox (full mailbox access,
granted in ADUC)
3. Set up user B so that he or she opens user A's mailbox in Outlook as a
secondary mailbox
4. Remove user A from any mail-enabled groups on the server

I'd still have mail go to user A, because user B can see that mail...unless
this is not desired. In that case, change user A's default SMTP address to
something bogus () and add the actual SMTP
address to user B's mailbox. The downside is that user B won't be able to
tell which mail was sent to which address easily, without using Outlook
rules.

When you're done and user B has copied over anything from user A's mailbox
that is needed, take the permissions away and hide user A's mailbox for a
bit. Then, after some reasonable period of time, delete user A's
account/mailbox.

I tend to prefer this over 'rename user A to user B' as I find it easier
than modifying an existing account, and the new user gets a clean setup.
Just my two cents.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I will try that out. But User B also needs to have
all the privileges of User A, like her access rights on the shared drive,
etc. How do I achieve this? Thanks!

I usually create new users by going to ADUC, drilling down to the OU where
the user accounts are, and right-clicking/copying an existing user. The new
user will have the same privileges, for the most part, and the same settings
(home directory, login script, roaming profile path, etc).

If not, just add user B to the groups you've assigned permissions to. Always
use groups for permissions (outside of home directories) - not individual
users. Makes life a lot easier.
