Can anyone please tell me if its possible to get the transparent glass menu
effect in classic windows start menu? I don't understand why this is not
available. I just don't like the new start menu but the transparent glass
effect is helpful because I have so many applications installed and my start
menu is long and I don't like using personalised menus.

Many thanks!

No.

Someone might theme a 'Classic' them to work with Aero sometime in the
future e.g. via Stardock or somesuch, but the 'Classic' themes as they are
now, when applied, turn off Aero and make little use of translucency.

When Areo is turned off, Vista handles graphics differently than when Aero
is on. When off, Vista works like Windows XP. Now Windows XP could do
transparency to some extent, but the themes supplied with Vista simply don't
make use of it.

I like 'Classic' too, but not for the menus, just because I can get the
windows to have the bright colours I like.

But here's an idea. You can organize your menus. If you have long lists of
similar apps, you can put them all in a folder e.g. "Internet Apps" or
"Media Viewers" or whatever you think is appropriate. Then the Start menu
shortens and is much easier to deal with. For instance you can put all your
browsers, email programs, instant messengers, FTP programs etc. into
"Internet Apps". Then the menus shortened. In other words, a shorter list of
top level categories.

You can organize the system wide menu items here:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

And menu items only for you, here:
C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Wind ows\Start Menu\Programs

where %UserName% is your, well, user name. You may have to unhide hidden
files and folders to see the "ProgramData" folder, you do that with Folder
Options found in the Control Panel .. turn on Control Panel's "Classic View"
to get to it.

Oh well there goes the last nail in the coffin of Vista Premium. Basic it
shall be!

Thanks for the clear-cut statement. I've been trying to get one on this
issue for a couple of days.

Thanks for the reply. But I'm not using Classic Theme just classic start
menu. Aero Glass is still running and I have transparent window bars etc. So
I'm wondering if its still possible with a registry hack or something.

Many thanks!
